I clamp the top tubes in the soft jaws in the vice and screwdriver through the axle clamp. Stand on the screwdriver to compress the two wee top out springs makes getting the top cap down on the main springs a little easier. Actually i use a small lop of rope now as a stirrup but thats just anal.
If the forks are in the bike i use a well aimed piece of wood between the bottom yolk and the fork brace to compress the tiny 'top out' springs. My top out springs are actually old valve springs from the cylinder head and are much stiffer than they ought to be.
Hope your springs dont swell up again until they get back into some oil. :D

I like the Stirrup idea Al, it’s not your first rodeo!
