Oil filter - Something missing ?

#1 PostAuthor: Big Fluff » Mon Aug 11, 2008 5:39 pm

According to the Kawasaki workshop manual, there should be a 'filter cover' that goes on the oil filter mounting bolt, after the O-ring. Do they mean a washer ? If so, is it's thickness critical ?

Basically, all that was on my filter bolt is the O-ring, then the spring, followed by the oil filter element and that's it :!:
I'm sure there is something missing..... :?? Please help.

Many thanks, Will

Good question BF.....

Just did the filter & oil on the ELR and there was a cover/shroud over the filter

It was fiited over the top of the filter (as it sits in the engine) and is about 20 gauge tin and about 20mm deep :?: :?: :?:

Dunno if thats the correct position, but thats how I found it :??

Will, I'm fairly certain that by cover Mr Kwak was refering to the round alloy plate that seals the sump, as shown in the photo you have posted. Later Kwaks also had a steel cover that went over the opposite end of the filter.

The thing missing is a steel washer that goes between the spring and filter .

Upto and including Mk2s - you are missing the washer that goes on top of the spring and stops it from biting into the filter rubber. Check your filter to see if it is stuck to it.

The later J/GPz motor also has a flat washer which sits on top of the spring where it meets the underside of the oil filter.

Will, I know that washer only too well!
A mate told me about it and dropped that little washer around to my place one evening. I hadn't filled the sump so, just before I was ready to go to bed, I raced downstairs to my workshop, reached under in semi darkness and undid the filter cover bolt. I noticed a few drops of oil dripping from the edge of the cover. Thinking it was just a splash of oil I had previously squirted into the engine, I continued, then all of a sudden ... whoosh... out came the filter, spring and cover and about a gallon of black oil...... Wrong Bike!

That bike was due for an oil change anyway.... Talk about feeling stupid.
