what oil, mineral or semi Synthetic oil

Hi,
I will want to do an oil and filter change when I get my 1978 Z1000 in a week or so, and wondered what oil you guys put in, mineral or semi synthetic,

my way of looking at this is you should us the oil that the bikes of that day had back then .non of this semi and fully muck .i have always used 10/40 gtx .my mate in the usa has just done 100.000miles on his mk11 shaft using gtx since new and the motor has never been apart .it does not leak and runs real sweet .he said he will be taking it apart at the end if this year just out of interest to see just how much wear there is on the motor after these miles .dont forget the engine is simple and almost bomb proof with the way they are built on roller bearings and only needs a simple good qlty oil in there .all the best

Castrol GTX .... its the best for normal day to day riding

geoff can this castrol gtx be normal 10/40 or is there a special one for motorbikes ,
the only one I can ever find is castrol gtx and it doesn,t mention for b ikes

When i first got my zed,I was wondering the same thing about oils,always used GTX in the 80,s with no problem,i phoned Castrol Technical services and the Guy i spoke to seemed fairly knowlegable and he recommended Castrol Power 1 GPS 10W-40 which is semi synthetic.Though GTX is still a good oil things have moved on in the oil world since then and improvements made so that is what he would recommend now.At the end of the day it is your choice and some prefer certain makes to others,Like you say GTX was good then so why not now........any help

gtx is more of a motor oil not that good as a gear box oil Hence I would go for a more specific motorbike oil

the guy i bought my z off said he put semi synthetic in and had to replace the clutch told me to use GTX

just changed oil n filter on mine. Used good old fashioned GTX, cos we ride good old fashioned bikes.

They were designed to use that oil IMO and im not taking any chances thinking about what the new additives do to engine components that werent designed to take them

As long as its designed for a WET CLUTCH, synthetic is OK

I use the best...... AMSOIL as recommended by Debben's... Nuff said

GTX most deifinetly, i've been riding zeds for almost thirty years never had a problem with it.

Someone earlier mentioned replacing a clutch after using a "modern" oil, that was caused by the "friction modifiers" in a lot of modern oil,

Same with me retro all i use in mine gtx never a prob and some say you shouldnt cuz its a car oil well i have for years and never had a problem even with the suzuki gs 1000 i had no problem and my gs 650 winter hack never a problem with gtx.

must change oil and fliter on my a4, and was just wondering what oil to useas well, i used duckhams 15/w40 mineral last time but i,m worried if it will affect the clutch or does it matter on a zed ?
