+1 - Works a treat but I want to give Keith's Coke and Drain Cleaner method a try next. Trouble is, the coke doesn't last too long around here

Checking through these old treads while her self is watching Sh!te on the box.
I know some of ye are using proprietary products like POR 15 etc. that have several components for rust removal, cleaning and then sealing, For those who have gone the coke and harpic, or citric acid route, what do you then seal the tank with. I imagine even leaving the tank full over the winter with E5 or E10 petrol would just be looking for hardship again in a few years?

I cannot give a quick answer for tank sealer. - But I have been involved recently in trying to clean up an old petrol tank with fairly light internal rust. This was my experience:
I cannot recommend the solution involving coke which after a few days left the tank with a brown sludge deposit and not much improvement. I then tried white vinegar solution and did not have much luck with that either. I followed available advice / procedure for both to the letter. If you try the coke harpic method be aware it expands a fair bit so do not fill the tank to the brim.
In the end I used Bilt Hamber Deox C Concentrated Rust Remover (1000g) from Amazon which for me worked better than anything else.
Until I use the tank again I put a light spray pf ACF 50 inside the tank which seems to be keeping the rust at bay - for the time being.

This worked for me, took a while because I wanted to be over careful? I did it in the summer, which helped, no damage done to the tank etc.

POR15 tank stuff is ethanol resistant, but I use the ethanol free Esso petrol, so I guess I am helping it to work.

Good luck

Thanks All,
Just to be clear, it seems most of you don't put anything in the tank to seal, at least not if you are going to fill it?

Never put a liner in a fuel tank, get the tank repaired (pin holes welded if needed. As you will end up removing it, which is a world of pain, say this having just removed POR15 liner from my Z1000 tank.

Thanks for the clarification Adrian, Is there anything we can do to help keep rust at bay once the tank is back on the bike. Keep topped up, put additive in petrol, drain tank in winter and coat with 2T?? :?:
