Thanks for the replies. Looks like I will have to repaint it.
Rob - the shocks you gave me were Showa piggy backs of a 1000R, which I think are different to what were fitted to the J1/J2 - see the picture of the std bike below. BTW those Showas were reconditioned and were fitted to my 1100R before it went to Norway.
Julian - thanks I will take you up on that offer. Yes it runs but the clutch plates are stuck fast. I will sort it out after I finish commissioning my Z1A. I finished the Z900 today and will get the Z1A finished over the next month.

z1000j shocks are the same as these but these are advertised as gpz750r1 but the r1 had red springs & black chrome shroud so these could be for the j model the compression damping was controlled by turning the chrome shroud which was nubered 1-4
