Advance retard unit.

#1 PostAuthor: Johno23 » Wed Oct 25, 2023 8:16 am

Hi, haven’t had much luck looking for a crankshaft main bearing, but thought I’d now try to track down something else I need .
The advance retard unit for the end of the crank. The bike is a Z1000a1 but suspect others may fit. If anyone has one to sell please let me know .
Or if anyone has a starter side main bearing, I need one of those too. Build is on hold at the moment until I find one. Cheers all.

That does look like the inner race of the bearing. However, I also need the housing it runs in which is also pitted, the housing slots onto the crankcase. So far cannot find one.

I think i may be able to help with the outer bearing race is some knowledgeable person can confirm that a MK11 or ST one is the same? I saved them when I had a scrapping session, I may also have an advance retard unit, but it will be either Z1 or Z900 I think, I guess I will need to identify it with numbers, if anyone can help? Cheers, Mick

Hi Mick, that sounds great! thanks. Hopefully someone can come along and confirm the advance retard unit also fits an a1.
Also that the bearing fits.
Do you have or could you take some pics, it may help me to identify them correctly.
Thanks again.

The MK2/ST crank runs bigger pins so the bearing race won't fit the earlier crank.
It has the same OD to fit the cases but larger ID for the later crank.

Looks like I’ve found an advance retard unit. :D

However I’ve noticed I don’t have the pin that locates in the end of the crank
Which locks the position of the advance unit.

Can you purchase this or do people make one somehow?

Pin is available new from ZPower etc and is about £3.
Just measured the inner track on the LHS of my J crank here and it is 32mm for information only.
I would have a word with Ray at Debben Performance in Ringwood. He's been repairing / re-building Zed cranks for donkeys years, perhaps he can help with the bearing.
