z1000j valve timing

#1 PostAuthor: Si » Sat Jun 24, 2017 9:53 am

Hi folks, looking for some advice before I cause damage. I have a 1981 z1000j which was smoking and using oil when I bought it. I have the engine out and on the bench. I did a compression test cold which was 80 70 80 80 then poured some oil down each hole retested and all four came upto 100. Now this is the bit that's really confusing me since I know nothing. I took off the cam cover to check the valve clearances which are ok in tolerance. Next I checked the cams which according to the Clymer manual are half a turn out. The marks should be facing out the way on cams and sprockets but they were in facing each other. Is the manual wrong. would the engine even run if cams were this far out, if it did would this be the cause of other problems, oil, smoke and low compression. Any help, advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I would suggest you turn crank to TDC. And take a picture and post it on here. As cam lobes point in different directions depending on crank position.

Thanks Adrian. I set cams in place there and took photos but will need to figure out how to get them on here later. Cylinders 1 and 4 are at tdc. intake lobe on 2 is up and exhaust on 3 is up. think I need to bolt it all back together and turn it over see where the marks are at. Thanks again.

Remember, 1 x turn crank = 1/2 turn cams.

When cam cover is on it'll change the cam timing slightly as the "slipper" built into the cover pushes the chain taking up some slack.
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Thanks for that, I did think that after puzzling over for hours. Think the timing is ok. Just going to take the head off and have a good look, work through everything. I poured some 2stroke petrol down the spark plug holes last night and it was gone this morning. Does that mean the piston rings could be worn or is that acceptable?

The comp figures you have are too low.
You may get away with a hone and re-ring but that's probably wishful thinking and chances are you really need a rebore and freshen up the head too while it's off.

Thanks guys. Got the head off today and the valves don't look too good from what I can see.
