Noise from clutch?

#1 PostAuthor: steve452 » Thu Oct 01, 2020 3:25 pm

Having installed all my Z1- B engine parts up to and including the cams and cam chain tensioner I've discovered a clicking noise when I turn the crank by hand which appears to be coming from the transmission cover on the left. I've also filled the engine with oil (3.7ltr as advised in the owners manual). It sounds like the external change arms clicking on the drum pins. I get a click about every 90° of rotation. The layshaft is also turning slowly as I turn the engine. Have I bolloxed up the build?.

Ignore the "Noise from clutch" heading as I forgot to amend it before posting. Noise appears to be coming from the other side.

Ignore the previous two posts as I've found the noise! It's coming from the KS spring and I think it's because the KS shaft is rotating when I hand-crank the engine and the spring has ended up mis-shapen (I'd attach pics but for some reason it won't add them). I've ordered another from CMS but is the shaft supposed to rotate, and if not, what have I done to allow it to? (Have I put the pawl on the wrong way round for instance?). Is this going to be another engine strip?

The pawl shouldn't engage when rotating the engine but you don't have to strip the engine to rectify the issue..
You can get at the mechanism through the sump to remove the circlip, pawl and shaft etc if needed..
The only thing that can't be removed is the shafts steel bush in the case that's located by the solid steel dowel.

Update. Just for the hell of it I fitted the KS pedal (without the return spring and collar fitted) and moved it down by hand. It turned the engine over as normal and I then returned it to its normal parked position. I then turned the engine over by hand using the RH crank nut and there was no noise from the KS mechanism, nor did the shaft try to rotate. I turned the engine through a few full rotations just to be sure. After removing the KS pedal and turning the crank again by hand the noise returned and the KS shaft started counter-rotating again. It's not the spring (which wasn't fitted) but sounds like the ratchet clicking against the KS gear. Should it do this?

I was about to post this,

'As we can now post pics again this is how the KS spring ended up. It was like that when I installed it'

When I got this message from our sponsor,

'ERROR
Could not upload attachment to ./files/8792_a29daa5556effa87ac76544da9c34fbd.'

Is this just me or is the site still broken?
