GPz cam bolt thread stripped

Hi All,

Looking for some help/advice, please. After re-shimming the valves on my GPz, I torqued the cam cap bolts back down only for 1 to keep turning I'm assuming the thread in the head has stripped and I'm looking fora solution. I'm thinking an insert would be possible, but the issue I see is the cam cap locating dowels uses the same hole as the securing bolt, so drilling out the thread for an insert will destroy the locating hole. Anybody had this problem and is there a solution ? I'm really hoping my head is not toast due to 1 stripped thread

You can get an m6 helicoil in those dowelled camcap holes without damaging the locating hole.
I've done hundreds.
The stripped holes usually don't need drilling for the helicoil tap either.

I already have a "Silverline" M6 helicoil kit, but the inserts are only 6mm deep (I think this is known as 1D ?). I presume I need longer inserts for the full length of the threaded portion of the hole - any recommendations on the length I need and suppliers ? Can I use the tap & insert tool from my kit with other manufacturers inserts ?

Apologies for the additional questions - I just want to make sure I get this right as it could be expensive if I get it wrong

You need minimum 2d.
Tap and insert tool will suit any M6 x 1mm coil inserts.

I remember from years ago, the torque for these in the manual was wrong, too high. But I THINK it was the Z1100R manual, but might be worth checking as it's around the same era, just in case.

The Kwak workshop manual states 1.2kgm (9ft/lb) and it always feels too much when I'm torquing up the bolts. Think I'll just use a small ratchet and "feel" in future

Hi.
I have the later 83 Kawasaki Service manual showing 12 f.lbs for the caps. Torqued my B2 caps without issue. Trick is to start lower, maybe at 6 and go up in 2 lb increments applying the load slowly. Double click at any given torque to allow for settling. Decent torque wench is mega important with small measurements. I use a mechanical 1/4 drive Snap-on for all small stuff.
