Z1000J type cams

#1 PostAuthor: Mick J » Fri Dec 20, 2024 4:56 pm

Guys, looking for camshaft advice. Cylinder head is a z1000j with camchain adapter on z900 bottom end with 1075 wiseco pistons. Are the later cams, Z1000j/gpz1100 type a smaller base circle than the early type? I am looking for general advice on which cams to run in this head, I was planning on using early type cams, but not sure if they are compatible with the later head. Any advice would be much appreciated, TIA, Mick

The info. you need is most likely posted here:

It will depend very much on how you intend to use the motor and what you are looking to achieve. Though I've not used standard "early type / kickstart motor" cams in such a motor, I'd expect that if you want something with a strong mid-range which will be easy to live with, if you choose the right carbs you'll get good results. You could always give it a go and see how it runs ?
Dave.

J/GPZ cams are the same base circle as the z900/z1000 and all will run in either head type.
There's no point in using J or pre Unitrack GPZ cams though as they are all similar or less lift than the stock early 900/1000 cams.

The only stock GPZ cams worth using are the 83-85 GPZ Unitrack ones which have more lift and duration than all the others.

Thank you both for your help. I thought I had read something about the base circle being smaller on the later ones, the info is invaluable, cheers Mick
