A4 Advance retard unit.

#1 PostAuthor: PhilMill63 » Mon Apr 28, 2025 3:58 pm

Hi, is there anyway to get new springs for the advancer? mine are so stretched I cant get the timing right as it flicking around on tick over. If I set it fully advanced with the sloppy unit affect the running? just trying to set up a fully rebuilt engine and carbs. Thanks.

I found the springs on Z Power so have ordered them, but the question still remains, will it affect the running? I'm struggling to get the 1/4 to time anywhere near close to the F mark on the strobe. Thanks.

The Z POWER springs work just fine.
They don't affect the static or full advance timing figure but rate of rpms it gets there.
Weak springs advance the timing too fast and too strong keeps it retarded longer.
Neither weak or strong springs will affect the ability to static time on the f mark or dynamically time at full advance so your 1- 4 issue lies elsewhere.
Regardless of spring strength you should forget the F mark and time the bike on full advance with the strobe and if running a Dyna S it can be done by hand.

I had an issue similar to this a few years ago on a z1000. I changed the points for a different set and all was well. I think it was said at the time that sometimes non original points sets can cause problems in setting up timing.

Thanks for the info, I will try setting on full advance but many change the points first, as the issue seems to be only on 1/4. The bike was running Boyer but it was a mess so I bought a secondhand pints plate on eBay which luckily came with a points cam too. New points and condensers are on order.
