Hey guys
After many (too many) moons my project Z1000A1 is nearing completion after a total rebuild, and the motor started second push of the button. I have the V5 in my name, but how to I change it to historic vehicle status ready for when I get it on the road?
Cheers in advance

How to change to historic vehicle status

Re: How to change to historic vehicle status
Fill in the V5 with "HISTORIC" entered into the change of tax class box .
Take to the post office with form V112 self declaration of road worthiness which counts as an MOT.
The chap/chapess behind the counter will look at the V112 and give it you back,Tax the bike online there and then and also send the V5 to DVLA free of charge.
In the UK you don't need insurance for the machine to do this and it doesn't need to be mot'd at a garage first, the V112 is enough.

Great Zed1015 - thank you very much!

Re: How to change to historic vehicle status
the last time i did this (about a month ago) I just took the V5C and said please change to historic. They did it there and then and new V5C turned up a week later.
Didn't need any other paperwork so i guess it depends on the person doing the change.

Everything you need to know is here :-
https://www.gov.uk/historic-vehicles/ap ... -exemption
The only fly in the ointment is the PostMaster if you get one thats never done it then it can be problematic, so the trick here is find a larger PO and go there, I have done about 5 of with no bother using the details on the website and you can download and print the V112 in pdf

Re: How to change to historic vehicle status
Thanks all. However I may have a problem - the bike is an A1 (1977) but was imported from Italy in 1996, so first registered here in 96 - which is what it says on the V5.
Also does it have to be insured to change the taxation class, or is that only required when you want to 'tax' it, albeit at zero rate?
Cheers

Get a date of manufacture letter from Vjmc, not sure if Jerry does them. Ross at kawasaki UK can do one also but charges.
That's all you need to give the dvla as proof of historic qualification.
I've had v5's changed to historic on uninsured or mot'd bikes.

Ah good, I thought that might be an option; I will explore. Thanks again!

Re: How to change to historic vehicle status
You don't need insurance to change the tax class to historic in the UK as stated in my previous reply.
As for the registration date.
On imports already registered in the UK it should state the year of manufacture on the bottom right of the front page if different from the date of registration ( all mine do )..
It is this that is used to date the vehicle for tax purposes not the date of registration.

Re: How to change to historic vehicle status
As Keith said it very much depends on the post master, we are very lucky to have 2 very good post mistresses in 2 different post offices. I've done 2 bikes just off the V5. The only thing that caught me out was that she said we could tax the bike there and then. I hadn't realised that you still taxed the bike but just didn't pay.

^^^^^ THIS. Just done a Z900A4 which was imported in 1993 but build date was 1976. No problem encountered,
