Z1100R running problem

rich running at low RPM is the problem, the bike fires fine, but pops and bangs a bit, it runs perfectly when you are giving it a handful, very quick indeed but just hates pottering about and won't pull cleanly from low revs in a high gear, judders like hell before it clears throat.
I've got the right BR8ES plugs in, there was a school of thought that resistor plugs didn't mix with resistor plug caps, but I haven't been able to find non resistor caps and the ELR has different caps for the outside and middle cylinders which is awkward.
The really annoying thing is the carbs were swapped with fully rebuilt ones from Wired George in the states who I have bought sets from before so I was expecting the problem to disappear, I really wish now I had bought a set of flatslides!

You should have only one source of resistance and shouldn't have both resistor plugs and caps.
You need one or the other.
If the caps really are resistor type then fit straight B8ES plugs.
That's very likely the cause of your running issues because the bikes electronic ignition won't like the extra resistance which will cause intermittent sparking at low rpms hence the popping and banging until the revs and ignition voltage rises.

Thanks very much for this, it would be brilliant if it was the simple answer, the NGK red plug caps definitely have resistance markings on them, Will Barber did mention this to me as well, but I couldn't find the non resistor caps, never thought of swapping the plugs duh.
Am needing to get the tank off anyway as the middle plugs are awkward to get to, so will wait for a dry day this week, keep you posted.

Well today I fitted pair of new coils with leads, set of new plugs, bike fired up and sounding great, but within 30 miles, problem was back, it seems to be back the no 1 cylinder fouling the plug, as I changed it twice and it cured it, then it fouled again.
This is what puzzles me as it was the original problem, but not so bad, it used to foul on start up, then was fine, and the new carbs havent solved it.
no 4 also running too rich but not as bad, that's why I thought maybe coil was at fault as they are a pair
Any thoughts on what to do next other than try to get it off to someone to go over it properly?

Are coils getting +12v when running?
Have you checked valve clearance?
Swap HT leads...... and plugs even!

have you got a carbtune to check your mixture?
If not I have one you can borrow. PM me and I will pop it in the post.
did the carbs you got from wired george improve things at low revs or make no difference?
Is it possible that you have fouling caused by oil in the cylinder?.
You could have a look in the exhaust port to see if there is evidence of oil in the downpipe.

A bit of progress, today i disconnected the pick up coils connector, and they were very green inside, so after cleaning them with a wee bristle brush, i eventually got a reading on my meter of within the tolerances in manual.
I replaced the two outer cylinders with B7ES plugs as suggested by Ralph, and after a 20 mile run, no misfire, and a decentish brown colour on plugs!!
Wonder if i have solved it?

Good news Dave.
When doing mine I had two IC igniters to choose from. Both were slightly under the resistance readings stated in the manual.
That’s when I gave up and got a dyna. Hope yours is within tolerance though.

Yep, they were both fine, it was handy having the proper manual giving all the specs etc, I am going to get out on it again locally in the next few days, be very interesting if something as simple as the plug change fixes it, but reminds me of the old adage, PPC, (plugs points carbs in that order!)
