Hi guys,
Firstly, apologies if the heading looks familiar, there is another (2007) thread that looks the same but i need a more specific answer if anyone can help.
The J is stripped now and I have a bare frame, first thing was to test just how ‘fits straight in’ the ZRX arm actually is. And the answer is not quite.
The next pictures show the rhs end of the arm.
With the bush out the arm fits with a small amount of play.
The thin outer face of the bush is almost 4mm.
Question is am I oversimplifying this by thinking a can get another bush with a thinner outer face
Or am I looking at an altogether different solution?
All help and wise words gratefully received. This is all new territory for me.
Thanks

Simple answer is yes!.
You can dispense with the wider outer face as it doesn't control end float.
Just use a spacer of the same diameter to fit the seal but of the length you require.
Not having done this exact swap myself i don't know if that keeps the wheel true central in the frame so some adjustment of the wheel spacers to correct that may be needed or equal amounts may be needed to be removed from each of the swingarm spacers to keep it central.

Thanks Zed,
That’s great news. Really appreciate you helping me out.
That’s a box ticked, I can order what I need now.
Don’t suppose you’ve ever grafted a set of ZX9R forks to a J?
Cos that’s my next puzzle.
Baz

Re: ZRX1100 swingarm into 1981 Z1000J frame
Best solution for the forks is use the original J stem in the zx9r yokes. Then machine the top yoke hole to fit as the stems are fatter diameter on the old bikes. modern stems tend to be to long so unless your happy to fit a spacer under the bottom bearing the length will be wrong.
One of mine I pressed out the stem and had it shortened and re-pressed. That worked wells as I could then just change the bearings.
Bandit yokes work quite well as they have the handlebar clamps and are 43mm and they will take a turned down zed stem easily.
Or ZRX11 if you can get them zzr1100 yokes also work but the top one is ugly but is offset so you can recover some fork height.
I use the simply bearings web site when trying to match the top and lower bearings to the stems. Normally the bottom one is fine but the top one is the tricky one.
Hope this helps.

Re: ZRX1100 swingarm into 1981 Z1000J frame
Thanks Kwacker,
I’m not confident with which route to take yet, ideally need to find something simple enough for me to pull off first time but with a pleasing look to it that won’t make me want to change it as soon as I can!
Hopefully I will get more confidence the more I do.
Is it ok if I message for more details/pictures when I’m ready?
Cheers

Re: ZRX1100 swingarm into 1981 Z1000J frame
Which ZX9 forks are they USD or RWU ?
I've used ZX9R usd forks on a few of my builds .
On the early Z9/1000's the outside diameter of the Z stem when pressed out of its STEEL bottom yoke is the same as the ID of the portion of ZX9 stem that sits in it's ALLOY yoke.
The Z stem needs the weld grinding or machining off the bottom of the yoke and then gets pressed out from the underside.
I machine off the ZX9 stem flush with the surface of the yoke leaving the steel remains in situ and press in the Z stem.
After boring the top yoke to take the top of the Z stem i assemble the forks and yokes on the bench to align and jig everything straight and then run a ring of weld round the under side to tie the Z stem to the remains of the ZX9.
There's some pics of this on page 4 of my latest build thread but using ZX7 USD forks which fit using the same method.

When you are setting up your chain length with that swingarm set it up so that the axel is at the top, they are eccentric adjusters if you have it at the bottom it may wear thru your swingarm.
Re: ZRX1100 swingarm into 1981 Z1000J frame
The forks are rwu.
Not sure what year that makes them.

Thanks Weaver, I will make sure I check for that when the time comes.

These are C1/C2 RWUs on my Z1000 as mentioned in the other post, I got yokes made with a bit of a step and mounts for original clocks and bars. The 1000R would be more dropped as the originals are longer than the early Z forks

That’s really cool, I could very easily live with that!
Would you be willing to share details of the yokes as I also would like to reuse the original
Clocks etc on mine?
