Where do I start?
I am trying to source Engine paint for the ELR. I could be wrong but I think the original paint was a satin.
I have a potential supplier who has made a few recommendations and he put me on to Frosts, who I'm sure I have hread some on hear have used, but there are a few issues I'm not sure about.
'Barrel paint' is being recommended to me. i'm told it does not need an etching primer to be used on Aluminium, is this correct and if so is it heavy enough to fill out minor blemishes like primer?
It is only available in an Aerosol, while I'm told it is a special valve, I would have though it couldn't compete with the finish from a spray gun. am I mistaken?
I am also told that although this is a 'very' high temperature paint, it is not suitable for calipers as these get hotter then the engine casing, is this correct?
Finally , I have been told I can use caliper paint (POR15) for everything, but it is closer to matt and will need a clear coat to bring a sheen to it, also it does not need etching primer AFAIKR... I don't want to reinvent the wheel, what are others using?

Simonez tough paint satin black. Straight onto bare metal from a rattle can. Fuel resistant after a heat cycle. Touch dry in 10 minutes. Easy to use and readily available.
I have a engine painted in it and 5 years no lifting or peeling.

Lad's,
thanks again for all the valued advice... Do you use etching primer first, or just standard grey primer before painting?
I got all the aluminium back and I'm itching to get spraying

Just blast it to bare ally.
Then heat to sweat out any moisture and spray.
No primer needed.
Let it dry overnight then either cure naturally with the engine heat or bake in an oven or under the grill.

That would be great, thanks.

Years ago there used to be a black engine spray paint called ( I think) P41 or some such. It went on really well and lasted. It also gave a nice sheen, rather like oil on water effect. Looked really good on a GS 550 I used to have. Don't know what happened to it...

PJ1 ..
They changed the formula and now it is useless.
Sperex Competition black case paint was the equivalent and very good stuff.
It is now called Sperex or Simoniz Tough black and performs the same.
It is fuel resistant once cures.
