Hi people, excuse any daft questions I may ask, I’m a new and very proud owner of a 1976 Z900 A4.
Took it out for a couple of runs over the weekend and absolutely loved it, the bike has been restored to a high (to my untrained eye) standard and has a full engine rebuild, it starts first jab every time but having not used chokes since the late 70’s I’m not sure how long I should let her warm up before setting off?
Also I don’t feel she ticks over particularly well (below 1000rpm) and wants to cut out if left to her own devices.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

After years of messing about with plug chops I now go straight to the man with the dyno. Takes away any doubt.
Also lower than 1000rpm seems low for tick over. I think my Thou’ was good at 1100.

Hi Stuart
start her with the choke and give her a minute or two, try to twist the throttle gently and if the revs go up and the engine responds to the throttle, lower the choke. If you want to know if the engine is at the correct tick over, check the revs after 15 minutes riding, when the engine is warm.
The revs should be between 900 and 1100, not more.
Take it easy the first 5 miles or so, give the engine the time to get warm. If the engine responds swiftly to the throttle, you can go a bit faster without worries.

Thanks for the advice guys, I forgot to mention that I have only done about 150 miles since the rebuild so I am essentially running the bike in, I’m guessing that should not have any bearing on how the engine is behaving?

Set tickover at 1000 rpm.
Get the choke off as soon as the engine revs clean.
When running in don't baby the engine.
All that 500 miles steady riding is nonsense and you risk glazing the bores.
Ride as normal without over revving and use plenty of engine braking to push the rings into the bores.
