Hi,
I'm looking for help/advice on the following for my 75 Z1B;
- what make/grade/type of engine oil and filter would you recommend?
- is it worth looking at a higher grade oil for the front forks (rear shocks are Koni's). Currently the front end feels a little bouncy and the forks are squeeking.
- can anyone recommend a good quality but reasonably affordable electronic ignition set up?

ah the old 'what oil should i use question'
I use motul 10/40 semi synthetic, others will say don't use semi or full synthetic - use duckhams 20w50. realistically and modern 10w40 that's for a bike with a wet clutch will be more than fine. Other opinions are available.
If you don't know when the fork oil was last changed then i'd put the std 10w oil in it and see how you go. If its too soft then you easily go to 15w
Agree on the dyna S - lots of supplier do them.

Dyna 'S' for the ignition.
Matching Dyna coils would get the most out of it too.
Any Jaso spec 10/40 semi for the engine.
Don't use fully synth unless it's formulated for roller bearing cranks such as Rock oil TRM 20/60.
Fork oil viscosity won't really sort out the bouncy front end.
I'd be looking at stiffer or progressive springs if fresh oil doesn't improve things.

I've got Dyna S with standard coils and HT leads.
I keep wanting to go for the dyna coils and leads, but opinions vary as to whether they are actually worth the extra money over "standard" replica coils?

Never dismiss the Newtronic/Pirahna optical trigger system as an viable alternative, although no longer available new, they are reasonably cheap and reliable SH. I have five units fitted they are the same "fit and forget" mentality and I have never had any problems with any of them at all in 25 years. As for the coils Dyna are good but require a bit of thought to mount if you do not want to introduce a whole world of pain,and without doubt they do not like being powered static for extended periods, so you pays your money blah blah

I've got a small variety of bikes and i run them all on motul 5100 10w40. If you've got a little fleet is really handy if you can use the same oil in all of them.
As the gents say, dyna S works well, though it still relies on the mechanical advance unit. The dyna coils seem to give a huge fat spark but do need a little bit of thought to mount them so they are reliable, plus they need a little loom making up to link the coils to the main loom.
It's worth considering updating the separate regulator and rectifier to a combined solid state unit. You can buy them with the correct terminals on so they are a direct swap. Peace of mind really, I don't trust those old mechanical regulators, especially as it'll be 40+ years old and the bike was probably built to last 10.
