Z1 900 carb parts.

#1 PostAuthor: Stan Peace » Fri Apr 29, 2022 9:22 am

Hi can anyone help? I'm looking for 1 bleed pipe for z900 carb. Unfortunately I'm not exactly sure what model the carbs are from but I suspect A or B model. The one I need has a small o ring near the top. Thanks Stan.

Not sure what you mean by bleed pipe (others on here may be familiar with the term) but you need to identify the carb first. Z900 used 26mm carbs but Z1-A and Z1-B used 28mm.

There were 4 variations of carb used on the Z1's and you can ID which you have by looking on the engine flange (see pic showing a 2170 type as fitted to the later Z1-A and Z1-B).

The numbers are 1470, 1472, 1473 or 2170.

Thanks very much for the information very helpful. What they call bleed pipe I would call emulsion tube but as I was only needing one I've just made it. Maybe you could advise about jet sizes, the carbs are 28mm and I want to fit them to a 1973 z1 900 ( it was out to 1200cc and fitted with keihin carbs when I got it) which is back to standard 903cc and I intend fitting K&N filters. Many thanks Stan.

There are some expert guys on here who will be able to help you with this type of query but I'm not one of them.

I'm sure there'll be some good advice along shortly.

Good luck with the project.

Hi thanks for the quick response but after my last post I thought I'd better go and see which models of carbs I had and I'm beginning to think I was sold the wrong ones. They were advertised as 28mm and were from an earlyish Z 900. I bought them quite a while ago and never thought to check them when they arrived ( mistake ) and they measure 27mm on inlet and the code on them is 1024A. Any ideas???? Thanks Stan. By the way I'm new to the Z world and obviously a bit green.

27mm on the engine side means they will be 26 mm at the slide as they taper slightly. These were fitted to 900 a4's and early z1000's.
Easy way to tell difference between 26mm and 28mm is the mix chamber cap on 26 is domed and 3 screw. 28mm are flatter and slope towards the engine side with just 2 screw.
Post a picture of them, side and underside. 26mm were fitted to several bikes Inc suzuki.

There's a huge amount of advice (not all correct so be careful) on the interweb and nudetoob but this forum should be your first stop for advice as there are guys on here who eat, drink and sleep Zeds.

If you want to get into them properly then I'd recommend a couple of books to kick off with, namely "Original Kawasaki Z1" by Dave Marsden (the owner of Z-Power and all-round top man) and "Kawasaki Z1 - Z1-B Restorer's Parts Book 1972 - 1975" (the June 2020 Sixth edition) by John Brookes, Both are brilliant for an introduction to the world of early Zeds and John's book is the go to place if you're restoring.

There are many others but those are a really good intro and both are usually available from Z-Power. They are obviously geared toward the Z1 models themselves but Dave's book does deal with the Z900 and later models.

Good luck.

They appear to be vm26ss. Oddly appear to be fuel screw only, no air screw?
Not sure what make/model/market they were fitted too.
Just too confuse some Vm26 have both air and fuel screws!

I believe he said he's fitting K&N pods. Wouldn't that affect the jetting?
