What other fuel tanks fit Z900 A4?

#1 PostAuthor: Gray17 » Tue Feb 28, 2023 2:58 pm

Strange question you may ask?
Well just took my tank in for painting along with £90 striping kit only to be told its the wrong tank ARGH! Think previous owner has fitted a cheaper ltd tank rsther then the correct A4.
So my question is are there any other tanks same shape and size that will fit? Im thinking Z1,Z1A, Z1B, Z650, Z750, Z1000 etc why? Because Z900s are pretty rare and costly so this may give me more
scope.
Have posted wanted on forum Thanks

Thanks but they are over £400 new, which i would love but on top of the painting and other costs, alas out of my reach
Whats the significance between the threaded fuel tap and the bolt on tap, are they both A4 tanks or is one an earlier type or are both ok, diff manufacture?

All the 900/1000's from Z1 through to MK2 share the same basic bare frame structure ( except the ST ) so most 900/1000 tanks will fit.

To keep it simple you want any Z900 A model tank or Z1000 A1/A2 tank.

Thats great thanks exactly what i needed to know, hopefully something will crop up on ebay or forum sale.
Its knowing what to do for the best.
The tank i have is for an LTD so smaller and diff shape to A4 i didnt know this until took in for painting and was shown the differences.
I cant use the striping kit on LTD tank due to shape, but painter says he can spray on the stripes similar and correct colour, but it would never be right and id end up having it done again with correct tank.
I can wait and see what crops up but could be waiting months, cant use buke while i wait and its 200+ round trip to painters each time.
Then theres sellars on ebay selling Z650 tanks sprayed to look like A4 to try and make more money, but these dont fit without mods and fuel taps wrong too, you also have to grind off fixing spike, purists would have a fit at resale too.
Then theres brand new pattern, no idea of quality but quite expensive, but of course less fettling before painting.
Its a really difficult one for me as spent a fortune so far, just keep finding more and more! Money pit springs to mind! Ha

The Z1000 tank has a narrower tunnel and the tank has a larger capacity than the previous A4. I know the A4 tank will fit the 1000A1/2 with a slight modification to the frame cup rubbers, but not sure the reverse is true.

That info seems to conflict with other info ive been given, im confused!!!!. Know its hard when trying to fit 1 thing onto another, theres always a conpromise.
The one ive seen is different in that rather then has the threaded fuel tap it has the bolted on one, which makes you think its a Z650 but apparently later Z1000 A2 had this type of tap and the A4 graphics def fit on and look correct. The bolt on tap poses yet another issue as my Z900 has twin fuel outlets 1 for each pair of carbs, the bolt on 1 only has a single outlet, I could use a Y piece but not sure you would get enough flow at high revs to keep floats filled.
Also my fueal taps brand new the other isnt so may well leak adding to the cost to replace it. Or is there a better way to do it, i know later carbs have a balance pipe on float chambers but my carbs dont have this.

Just had another look at that ebay tank. It looks to be 1000 a2 not 650 as I previously thought.

Yes that seems to be general consensus, it does look very similar to A4 and will obv fit the frame, its just the tap only having 1 outlet, whereas mine has twin, which feeds each pair of carbs, guess you could use a Y piece but not sure if you would get sufficient flow to carbs?

Don't think tap flow rate would be an issue. Imagine if the tank was full but off the bike. If you turned the tap on and let it flow to empty. It would empty in within 10 minutes.
If you used a tank of fuel every 10 mins whilst riding you wouldn't get between petrol stations.
There's this one on ebay also.
Item number 155420123713.

Either would need Sean's attention anyway.

Thanks Warren, think youre right, prob just over thinking it, guess when you've come up against as many issues as i have recently you look for things that arn't there just in case.
Yes seen that one, again its a collect only 100 miles away, and the badges recess and fixing holes been filled so you'd have to either try and strip filler off or glue badges on, not sure how secure that would be even with 3m tape, also you'd still have the screw holes in badge which would look unsightly. Then it may uncover other damage thats just been filled? Which means more work for painter so price goes up! Vicious circle
Everything you look at has pros and cons, nothings just straightforward, but guess thats trouble with 40+ year old parts!
