Pardon my ignorance but why do the swing arm caps have an elliptical cut out in them? Is it to let grease escape? And when installed should the cut out face downwards?

Because of the depth of the cup the cutaway is to clear the weld at the curved junction where the arm meets the pivot tube.

Good question, that came during Z1-A production.

Z1 did not had them in that shape
