Z1100 Z1000 heads barrels

#1 PostAuthor: Bert » Tue Dec 19, 2023 4:55 pm

Hi,
I'm looking for a top end to fit a Z1100 ST bottom end. Not sure if Z1000J heads and barrels are the same fitment other than cc?
Trying to acquire parts as I go but don't want to look for parts that are not compatible. Will also need carbs, cams etc.
Cheers, Rob

Got a set of BS34's J model been on the shelf since 84. If interested I'll be seeing my brother over Xmas and he's Redditch based. I'm in Kent but will both be in Cornwall over Christmas.

Just note different gudgeon pin sizes. Some 17mm and some 18mm from memory.

Aren't you doing a 1000 ST , not an 1100 ? If it's the 1000 you want the earlier 1015 parts not the J parts .

Heres' an 1100 head. Its the 'bispherical domes' version and looks to be good condition and complete apart from cams and a good price for one of this type.

I am doing an ST but have dropped on the 1100 bottom end which does fit with some frame mods. Mainly consisting of rear lower mount delete and modified front mounts (my frame already been butchered on the near side front mount so no tears when plugging in the grinder)
I'll send pics when I have time!
The bonus will be having the rubber mounted motor which will improve motorway vibes etc

You need to measure the little end eyes to establish which 1100 version you have and which head you can use.
18mm pins means 1100 unitrack and some ltd/spectre models with bathtub head the same as in AL's ebay link.
If it has the more common 17mm pins then most 1000J and early GPZ1100 heads with plain hemi combustion chamber are what you need ( Except probably the GPZ1100 B1 with longer inlet tracts and injectors mounted direct in the head) .
You cannot use the 1100 unitrack/Spectre heads on the 1000J/Early GPZ1100 without piston mods but you can use any of the barrels.

I'm sticking with shaft drive! The Z1100 swingarm is the same fitment other than the bevel box runs a marginally shorter ratio. The added bonus is there is better clearance which will allow wider rim choice in the future, will use the Z1000ST rear wheel for now and see what turns up. I think some of the VN models run the same bevel with spoked rims so could go for a wheel rebuild with a more appropriate rim size.

Been running shafties for 20 plus years and the thought of going back to a chain seems like a backwards step.

Thanks, that's really helpful.
Just measured the little ends and they are 17mm which makes life easier (I hope)
Pictures attached of the mock up so far.
The rear 1100 engine mounts line up perfectly, just need to drill out the frame bolt holes to take the slightly larger 1100 bolts.
Shaft/swingarm is fitted to the back of the engine so no issues there.

Here is a viable way out of youre situation. I know its a full engine but by the time you buy; head, cam cover, barrels and a set of pistons that will cost you more. You will also end up with a load of good useable spares going forward and they do say make an offer so might get it a bit cheaper than the advertised price!!

Hi AL,
Yes, I agree! Pricing up individual parts I know it's going to be more expensive. Will probably pull the trigger on this one or one like it, I think there are two available.

I'd be very suspicious of buying a stand alone engine. If its any good why isn't it in a bike?

It's from D&K.
More money to be made splitting a good machine than selling it whole.
