Battery and clutch questions
I have existing battery which is struggling to turn it over, could be the high compression pistons producing 160 for the compression, have attached photo .Probably need one with a bit more power does anyone use a stronger one ? Now my engine has been sorted I notice that the clutch is a bit noisy which reduces when lever applied. Is there anything than tends to go in the clutch area that I might need to look at.Apart from that the bike is running great, the carbs have been balanced

Re: Battery and clutch questions
Battery, motobatt gel for a bit moe ooommpphhh.
Noisy clutch on these is normally mainly due to carb sync.
Cheap carb synced tools are rubbish and cause more issues than they solve.

Re: Battery and clutch questions
Synced with what kit though. Check each cylinder using the same single quage on all four and see if they still read as balanced.
Test your test equipment to ensure its doing what it should.

Re: Battery and clutch questions
Thanks warren will try tomorrow using the same gauge
Re: Battery and clutch questions
Taken before and after carb balance, clutch still a bit noisy compared to my z650.Perhaps a job for the winter,it’s probably the only bit that hasn’t been taken apart this year!!!

Re: Battery and clutch questions
Clutch hub dampers will be shrunken allowing you to rotate the drum back and forth. Check using a screwdriver through the oil filler cap.
Primary chain from the crank that powers the gearbox probably has some slack in it due to chain stretch. Wear limit is 27mm total slack, fully in to fully out.
Those two combined will cause primary chain lash and hub judder which make a horrible noisy bottom end at low revs as they fight each other. Poor carb sync will compound the issue.

Thanks Warren will definitely try the screwdriver trick.

You are getting mixed up with the 650 set up.
No primary chain to get slack on the 900/1000's and it'll be the dampers springs in the clutch that have either weakened or broken..

Re: Battery and clutch questions
Thanks for the input guys, had me rushing for my manual !!
Re: Battery and clutch questions
Took the clutch apart on 1976 z900,the springs were a little uneven .5 difference between the highest and lowest so I have replacements coming tomorrow. The friction plates were hardly worn.Looking at the steel plates there is a bevel on one side of the plate teeth, when I took them out they were facing towards the engine is this correct?
Re: Battery and clutch questions
Doesn't matter which way the plates go.
They are only beveled due to them being stamped out when manufactured.
Which ever way i put them back in though my ocd dictates that they all go in the same way which is usually with the beveled edge facing out.

Re: Battery and clutch questions
Thanks a lot,I am with you they would definitely be put back all the same way.”
Re: Battery and clutch questions
The pressure plate springs measured 32.3 2x 32.5 and 2x 32.7, new ones arrrived at 33.8 so quite a bit of difference.Cleaned out the bolt holes with a blind tap and refitted the bolts, used my small torque wrench then broke the bolt off!!!Fortunately because I had tapped the hole I managed to retrieve the broken piece with a small screwdriver thank god.On examination of the bolts it looked like a couple of the bolts were not tight enough and the washer had worn a groove in them.Anyway the clutch is back together with no noise at all with 5 new bolts. Thanks to the forum again for the help
