Z1 valve guide sleeving

#1 PostAuthor: marmck » Tue Dec 16, 2025 12:42 pm

Hi , I need my valve guides sleeving ( z power recommended doing it instead of replacing the guides, ) z power recommended someone but they are currently on the move & can't do it until the new year . So I'm looking for recommendations of places that you have had this work done with & cost , just incase the place z power recommended fails though. Hope this makes sense , thanks in advance Martin

Hi Martin,

When I had the head refurbed for my Z900 A4 I had K-Line phosphor bronze liners installed.
The claim is that the offer the advantages of not having to disturb the original guides, better oil retention and improve wear rate.
All I can say it my bike has run well since the work was done but I'm sure it would be just the same with conventional replacement guides....
The engineering company that carried out the work for me has ceased trading but the companies below offer the service.

Overall I think its quite a neat idea though.

I hope the above is of some help.

Best regards,
Sean

Thks for the links ,I had heard of j&e engineering but not the other, all 8 guides are worn being a earlyish z1 , it was running fine for 7 years then this year developed a rattle on warm up . So in the garage she goes , rattle was a broken cam chain guide , so got all new guides & rollers etc . The top of the barrels required skimming as the sleeves were not level in places (3 thou ) 2 were under in 2 places & 2 were under in 1 place , very strange. So I said replace the valve seals while its apart thats when the play in the valves was noticed, it also needs the head skimming. Hopefully the guy z-power recommended is up & running soon & can do the repairs . Got me fingers crossed.

Don't skim the head until you check that the cams will spin free with the head off and valves etc removed otherwise you can ruin the head.
Some of these heads have a slight twist when unbolted which straightens out when re fitted and if skimmed the twist will remain in the cam journals when bolted back down which will cause the cams to bind and knock out the shells etc.
