Credit to you mate, will you have it at the Stafford show?

Be a shame if it wasn't there.. one of the most comprehensive builds iv seen this year by far.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water or in this case back out on the road..
Bloody Electrex strikes again
Done 135 miles between the showers and fettling in the last couple of weeks and decided to nip to a mates in town today while the weather is holding out and when i came to head home the battery was totally dead.
I suspected a duff battery but after 40 mins on a charger it held enough juice to get me home so it wasn't that.
Once home i got it on the lift, checked all the connections and then went at it with the multi meter which showed absolutely no current being produced from the windings.
A quick dismantle shows nothing adrift with my rotor assembly and nothing visually wrong with the windings, there's equal resistance between the phases ( although i don't know what that figure should be ) and no continuity to earth so in theory it should work but after double checking it several times it's still dead as a dodo.
I can only presume it hasn't been producing any charge since day one and Electrex has wound it incorrectly or something ,It appears i've done 135 miles solely on the battery running total loss and it's sheer luck that it ran out of juice at my friend house and not in the middle of nowhere.
I bought this at the beginning of 2023 and had it safely stored in the parts stash since so i expect there's going to be some fun and games when i phone Electrex on Monday to try and get it repaired or replaced.
Effing unbelieveble

When mine was first new and you pulled the outer cover (eventually) it would pull spanners from around the garage and they and everything else metallic would stick to it. When it went 'off', it would barely hold the weight of a 1 thou feeler blade to itself.

Is it still working ok though ?
My rotor is as new and very strong but there's not a glimmer on the meter .
I can only assume it's the windings but nothing looks cooked or out of place.
Multi meter shows no shorts to earth and each phase shows the same resistance although if that is wrong it may be the issue.
The one on the alloy cafe still works fine 10 years on since i sorted the rotor alignment.
Re: Double the troubleZZ. AMA style Racecrafters Z1000 (completed) and Moriwaki Z1R Turbo.
No it wasnt. It had a low charge condition and my knee jerk response was to replace the rotor. I also replaced the Reg Rec as i had bought a spare for emergencies. If you have a known working setup on the other bike you could take a few readings with the MM and compare. Maybe swop the Reg Rec over or even the stator.
Is the rotor loose on the hub or any marks on the rotor to suggest it has been jamming against the stator? It looks like the centre fixing bolt has hit the inside of the outer cover at some point!

No! there was nothing wrong like that.
Everything is tight, the rotor is pinned to the carrier and there's 10mm between the rotor bolt and the cover.
The marks on the inside of the cover are from Electrex when they machined the inside BUT the lesson for today is not to overlook ANYTHING when dealing with Electrex.
I have now got charging current close to 14v when revved and the culprit is in the pic.
The meter tests didn't make sense, the resistance and continuity indicated that the stator was good, there was no reason not to get some sort of voltage so decided to check the output wires and factory fitted connectors and when i got to the plug on the reg/rec i found that the cable crimps weren't gripping the wire , the insulation crimp not even crimped at all and the wires just fell out when i removed the rubber seals on the waterproof plug.
There's no wonder it wasn't charging

All sorted now .
I don't have the correct crimp tool for those waterproof connectors so fitted a normal three way spade block.
At least i know it's contacting as it should now

Top diagnostic work Rob

You would think that they would check it properly before selling it. That's some good fault finding work Rob ,and would have had me scratching my head for sure

You would have thought that was the end of it but after around the same amount of miles as before it did it again and miraculously at another friends house.
After a jump start and thrash home it had put some charge back in the battery but a check with the multimeter showed the reg/rec was faulty and kicking out randomly zero or + 18 volts.
I've now dumped the Electrex reg/rec which i'm sure is a cheap Chinese item they just etch the Electrex name and part number on..
And fitted a Shindengen one i had lying around from a low mileage 400cc Suzuki Bergman scooter which i know is ok.
It's a little bigger than the Electrex one so i had to slot the holes to fit my mount and mill 8mm off the fins on one side to clear the frame tube.
I've also temporarily fitted a volt meter tucked away low down off the speedo mount
Which can easily be seen and monitored when riding.
So far it seems to be charging ok with it showing + 12v just off idle, rising to 14.6 volts max and holding around 13 volts in the batt at standstill after a 30 mile run out.
Hopefully that's the charging issues sorted and i'll remove the volt meter once i know i can trust it

Wow i think you have had more than your share of fake parts Rob
, some nice milling to get the Shindengen one in place too .Great idea about fitting a volt meter for keeping a close eye on what's going on. Lets hope that's it cured now and you can get some hassle free rides
