Re: 1400 Mk2 Restomod
To keep things simple, I bought a matching Z900RS swing arm, rear caliper and spindle. It was a risk, and sadly I cant use any of these parts as the swing arm pivot area is far too wide to fit the frame, and it cant be modded to fit.. A Shame as the arm would have been easy to convert from mono to twin shock.
I don't really want to use one from a ZRX1200 as already used that twice before, maybe a XJR1300 will do? Ordered one, only £50, and from the look of its pivot area, plenty of meat on the arm to machine it down to fit the old Zed frame if needed....
Note that there are two versions of the XJR1300 swing arm, the early version has a 20mm wheel spindle while the later version has larger spindle. I got the early version, as the Z900RS rear wheel I want to use also has a 20mm wheel spindle.
Of course the pivot spindle is a larger diameter at 20mm than the original Zed spindle at 16mm. That can be solved by either modding the frame or using a Zed spindle with top hat spacers to make up the difference in the swing arm. However, after a lot of research I found that the bushes used in a Suzuki GS1000 are the correct size to allow the standard XJR bearings work with the Zed spindle. While the swing arm pivot area only needed narrowing by 10mm to fit the frame.
Its a nice looking arm, on this project it wont be left anodised or polished.

Re: 1400 Mk2 Restomod
The twin pot Brembo rear caliper which couldn't be used on the R6 disc of the Mk2, found a new home on the Z1000A1. Had to buy a piece of 20mm thick alloy plate to make a mounting bracket, as it needs to be stepped when using this caliper..
While the XJR swing arm is well made, and very cheap, I want to make it a little different, by added an underbrace. The tricky part will be bending the alloy box section without it buckling. I've read that pouring a low melting point alloy inside the box section works well, so bought some called Bismuth, and will experiment with it soon.

That’s going to be nice and very different. Keep the photos coming!
Re: 1400 Mk2 Restomod
XJR1300 swing arm is good , I have done quite a few, but I think you may find that bracing will foul the chain run…

Does it not depend on how the underbrace is made, after all the ZRX1200 arm is underbraced, and fits my 1170 ok?
Re: 1400 Mk2 Restomod
I've put XJR arms in quite a few zeds.
Including these two current builds.
Once the wheel has been centralised to the shock mounts, equal amounts ( around 5.5mm ish ) need to be machined off each end of the pivot to get the required 231mm pivot tube width + 2mm each side for the 1mm thick end cap and 1mm shim to take it to the 235mm required to fit the frame.
There's also enough meat to line bore the frame pivot to 20mm to take the 20mm spindle.
Much better than using the z spindle with an actual measurment of 15.8mm in the 16.2mm frame boss and achieving the stock .4mm of slack that almost makes fitting a stiffer arm pointless.

Re: 1400 Mk2 Restomod
Bracing may work, but I think it would have to be pretty deep braced to clear the chain.
As the XJR swinger is quite chunky it would end up a bit 'cluttered' imho, and as Rob says, a bit pointless really...
Guess its your build though!

Re: 1400 Mk2 Restomod
The Z1R pics confirm that I prefer the black to silver finish on the XJR13 arm. Haven't decided yet on the underbrace. My 1170 has 20mm swingarm pivot, along with bracing around that area of the frame. For the MK2 the frame has already been braced and powder coated before I got it, so don' want to mod the frame anymore than that. One thing I found odd, is that the standard 16mm pivot bolt (bought new from Z-Power) is a few mm to short, for the lock nut to fit correctly. Will need to fit a stainless half width locknut instead.
BTW how much longer, if any, is the XJR arm, compared to a standard Zed swing arm. From the pics, it looks as if the shocks are angled slightly more the standard?

Re: 1400 Mk2 Restomod
About 2.5-3.0 inches depending on where you land your rear spindle mate

Re: 1400 Mk2 Restomod
Thunderace arms look the same as xjr but are about 30mm shorter.
If you are worried about the length.
They are also cheap!

Re: 1400 Mk2 Restomod
That's useful to know, the XJR13 arm was only 50 quid, while a ZRX12 arm is closer to 300.
Re: 1400 Mk2 Restomod
New side panels and Z1 tank.. all the way from Japan. Quite reasonable price having seen how much dented, rusted out tanks go for on Ebay.
Re: 1400 Mk2 Restomod
Thats looking good with the arm in, my gpz project has an XJR Arm
Must start working on it again at some point soon. Just looked at my project thread and I started it in 2017
I blame my ADD

Re: 1400 Mk2 Restomod
Not too sure about the tank box it's sitting on.
