Little zed carbs and Plungers

#1 PostAuthor: Zebedee » Tue Jun 07, 2022 9:39 pm

Got some choke plungers from Rob Meggitt. They arrived today while I was at work.
Got home just after 6 and started on sorting the carbs

Adding a video of the bike actually running (started first time) has defeated me!), anyway she started first time and was so much smoother and more urgent.
Still need to balance the carbs but hopefully they cant be that far out. And then put the top caps on.

All in all
1. New O rings.
2. New pilot jets
3. New main jets
4. Clean bodies and all passageways
5. New gaskets
6. New choke plungers
7 Set float heights dry and wet method
7. Polished bowls and caps
8. Reassemble and refit.
9. Fill with fuel (no leaks)
10. Turn on tap (still no leaks)
11. Tap bowls (still no leaks)
12. Open choke
13. Hit starter
14. She starts

A tip from the last time I had the carbs off was I smothered the carb to airbox rubbers in a rubber treatment high in carnauba wax ( natural rubber treatment) and then put them in a closed plastic bag.

I then fitted the carbs to the inlet rubbers and inserted the carb to airbox rubbers through the top hole of the airbox and through the airbox holes and onto the carbs and as they were squasy and flexible it was relatively easy ( all things are relative on a continuum - right).

Well popped out tonight to see what the lie of the land was with respect to pick-up and fuelling and running.

Ran as smooth as and is great on pickup so all good.

Put two cans of fuel in and went to the local station and brimmed it so I can check how many miles/ MPG I get next time I fill up. Hopefully it will be a big improvement on the 15-18 mpg I was getting on the trip to the ace cafe after the firts carb rebuild.

Fingers crossed for a good result, 45mpg average should be do-able.

Distances are in KM as my bike is and Italian import and the speed is in kmh and so is the Mile(Kil)ometer

Did 160 km and met up with some fellow Z1OC members at Wendover and we wnt to the Classics on the Crick at Naphill.

Went onto reserve at 142 km and made it back to Bicester 159.2km.

Brimmed it back up with shell vpower 5% at £2.01 per litre and it works out at 32 mpg for a mostly 6-70 mph run.

Pulled the plugs when I got home and they were like the coalmans cat, black and furry.

So ive leaned off the airscrew a further 1/8th of a turn and I’ll see what difference that makes?

Strikes me that contrary to the previous advice here that the 100 main jets (as per haynes manual) rather than the 102.5 fitted (as per Clymer manual) might be the answer?

And Im wondering is it possible to drop the bowls and change the main jets from underneath(?) without removing the carbs?

Thoughts and collected wisdom please?

Looks like the new plungers seals did their job although the MPG is still a little low.
However! unless you did a high speed plug chop the colour of the plugs only indicates the running conditions when you came to a stop, not main jet fueling.
Is the bike is a US model as some years were jetted differently and had a 95.5 main and different needle etc .
To determine main jet requirements you need to cut the igniton under load at over the 3/4 throttle position.
Sounds like you should be on the right track looking at the pilot mix and lower end fueling.
