As good as finished ... Z1000ST: MK2 clone ..

Together with a friend of mine we built this Z1000ST resto mod. It took us almost 5 years to get as far as this as we only worked on saturdays when we both had time. Drank some beers too. We decided to make it look like the MK2 but fitting MK2 parts to the ST made us realise that was too much work just for the looks. So we had the complete ST bodywork painted in MK2 colors but with more metallic in the blue and gold. Much to our surprise it turned out stunning. The stock frame has been modified for the ZX10R monoshock and home made link system with adjustable dog bones for a B-King. The VFR 750 single sider swingarm with Triumph hub and wheel has been fitted using bushings/spacers between frame and swingarm to get the rear wheel in line. Offset front sprocket to get the rear sprocket in line. The offset was big but we don't like the existing outrigger plates that are for sale, so we welded the support for the outrigger bearing inside a later Kawasaki engine cover. We used larger sprockets (19T up front) than normal to prevent the chain from touching the swingarm. Front forks are ZRX1100 with DLC coating , ZRX1100 front wheel with radial Brembo calipers on adapters and KTM Superduke discs on adapters. Both wheels painted like the MK2: black and with polished sides. We found some nice GTR1400 radial master cylinders left and right. Fitted 2004 Blade switch gear which turned out to be a pain in the neck as they normally talk with the ECU which does the rest. All modern electrics with MK2 replica wiring harness and modern fuse box. Headlamp glass is clear. Home made footrest brackets with Tarozzi shifter and brake lever with billet master cylinder. the Laser exhaust has a muffler on the right and a remote operated valve on the left. Electronic Speedhut gauges in stock surroundings (holes welded shut) and GPS antenna. Engine rebuilt , hydraulic clutch. Oil cooler with thermostat and also titanium and stainless bolts and nuts on frame and engine and handmade engine brackets ... Frame painted mat black and that looks greats. Biggest setback were the electrical connectors from Louis in Germany which took us almost 9 months (and some beer) to figure out that the electrical Gremlims were caused by them. Once swapped with good ones (which were bigger sadly) all fell into place. The bike now gets brake lines and is then ready for start-up.

Don't normally like single siders on these but that sits just right and i didn't notice it straight away..

I have just bought a S T frame to do similar. Did you manage to shed any weight from the frame and did you brace it anywhere ?

There isnt much weight to shed mate and no need to add more in bracing, the frame is solid, i would be more concerned about running gear, what front and back end to use, there is a big void in there when you take away the shaft drive.

So its a monoshock conversion or will you weld on twin shock mounts? you should start a build thread, even at the early stage its good to get the advice of those that have been there and done the same.

Thanks for the kind remarks guys. We're really proud of it.

@AndyM , well you got the remarks about the frame. However you should consider the weight you're going to shed when making a retromod.
It is considerable:
1: swingarm with shaft and gear drive
2: middle drive gear on the engine
3: stock wheels, discs and brakes
4: stock forks and twin shocks.
5: stock fenders
6: stock exhaust
