Dyna S - Z1B to GPz1100B1

#1 PostAuthor: Big Fluff » Fri Apr 04, 2014 5:26 pm

I have fitted the old Dyna-S ignition system from the Saxon onto the GPz1100B1 engine in my ELR.
I can't get the timing anywhere near (well about 5 degrees from where I'd like it) and I'm pretty sure it's the rotor that's different.
The mechanical advance unit is the original GPz1100B1 item with the Dyna-S Z1B rotor fitted.

I have two questions:
1). What number rotor should I fit (3, 3A etc)
2). Can I simply elongate the the three holes in the backplate to bring the timing in?

Thanks, Will

Will
3A is for 72/73 Z1 engine.
Ditto what Pigford says about elongating the module back plate holes.

Will i had this same problem and looked at the rotors and elongating the slots, till i stripped down and found the split pin dowl in the end of the shaft had bent and was causing the error in the timing, worth a look mate,,Cheers Paul J

Cheers guys, pin on the end of the crank is fine. Will elongate the holes and set at full advance.

Even if the advance is a bit out (too slow or fast}, I've never noticed much difference on my Z1000 - and remember to hold the advancer fully open when setting

Big Fluff, I have never tried this, however, somewhere in a DynaS previous posting, someone suggested you reverse the plates so that the modules are screwed from the other side and there is room for adjusting to full advance, without elongating holes. Probably worth a try! It just changes the geometry of the hole positions.

Update

The adjustment holes are symmetrical so in the end I had to elongate them.
The ignition timing, both fully advanced and static are now bang on.

However it still runs like a complete bag of shit
Hence the HELP thread http://z1ownersclub.co.uk/forum/viewtop ... 486#257486
