Clutch cable adjuster was very tatty and dirty. I don't like the pattern ones so tried soaking it in coke overnight but not much difference so tried 24hrs in brown sauce (hp of course) and its turned out very acceptable.

My god what a coincidence I've seen this engine in the flesh! I was at Steve Smethurst's place on Saturday dropping off a Z1A engine for cleaning and he showed me this gem he'd been working on.
He's now offering an engine cleaning service where if your happy your engine is in good order and doesn't need stripping but still needs the cleaning treatment, the process is he blanks off all openings and seals them then pressurises the engine internally to 10psi to ensure nothing gets in. Then vapour blasts in the normal way using a larger than normal glass bead media. Spectacular result I'm sure you agree but as in most things Mr Smethurst, very good quality but more than a tad expensive.
Great project btw looking really nice will be watching with interest.
One thing to note though the exposed cylinder studs will need some anti corrosion treatment because the cleaning process removes the dirt and grime very well but also the zinc plating. Maybe some rub and buff applied with a small brush between the fins would provide some protection.

Hi Dave, I've some new studs to go in so as long as the old ones come out , everything should be OK.
Two reasons I had for doing the engine in one piece was time involved stripping and rebuilding, and also if the engines in one piece and sealed then the media can't get into the oilways . My mate has a cabinet so can clean his own case's etc but he spent a full day almost with the case's in the bath washing and blowing them out time and time again..

I'm doing a similar thing to my '77 Z1000A1. It won't be a show pony but i would like to get the engine cleaned without splitting it. How much did it cost and how do i contact Mr Smethurst?
Also leaning towards Blue Z1B paint. Yours look beautiful. Would you recommend your sprayer? How much did that cost?

Z Thou's in Z1B colours have been done-to-death. Modern paints and spraying techniques can produce some fantastic colours and finishes without going down the same old - same old route again.
And I can second Richie at FX in Ormskirk as he's done a few bikes for me and his work is TOP quality..

Z1B candy blue was such a beautiful colour though! Not surprised to learn i'm not the first to consider what i'm proposing. Haven't decided 100% yet but wanted an original 900 scheme. It's between that and Green with the green/gold pinstripes.

Put the engine back in last Monday. Can't find the rear left side engine mounting bolt spacer so I might be on the scroung for one.
Got a 530 chain conversion but not sure what the spacers are for .
I presume it's nut ,sprocket, then small spacer. Big one moves the sprocket too far out on the shaft.
This nice box turned up today aswell. Had to carry it from next door but one. Almost gave myself a bloody hernia.
