That rubber block has to come out. At best i t will come out with the oil. If not it it should be in the sump cover...which you'll have to take off.

Yep, it did mate. When I drained the oil down it popped out of the drain plug. Happy days !

Now that the head is stripped, I could use a little more advice please guys.

As you may have read earlier, I stripped the engine to the base gasket due to the oil leaks at the front of the engine. I think that's all solved and fixed now, it seems it was being caused by the cam tunnel o ring and knackered head gaskets. So moving on from there, the head and the tops were quite coked up with carbon deposits. As the bike never smoked on start up and according to the guys I ride with only ever gave an occasional puff of smoke if I was tanking it a bit, the original intent was just to clean it all up replace valve stem seals and refit.

Having got the valves out, the backs of the inlet valves were quite thick with quite soft grungy carbon on top of baked on carbon deposits. I scraped it all off with a piece of hard plastic and cleaned it up with green scoury pad thingy. The inlet seats look clean and shiny but the exhaust ones black, and looks like some specks of carbon built up on the actual sealing surface. The valve stems do wobble a bit in the guides, but I'm not sure if that's a definite that they must be changed.

I guess the question, based on all of that, should I just clean it up and reassemble as I was originally planning to do ? Or does all of what I've described point to the need to change the guides and it would be silly not to do so whilst I have the head off ?

If it's the latter, is there anyone on here in / around the Bristol area that knows of a good place to get the work done ? I was originally thinking I'd have a go myself but have decided against it based on earlier advice in this thread.

is there any 'wobble' between the valves and the guides ? - if so its likely you'll want them changed.

Typically exhausts guides wear first.

I was told if you're going to get them changed best to have the head blasted first.

Sorry - can't help with Bristol people to do the work - I've mostly used Buzzard in London recently.

Also use Viton valve stem seals

One last trivial question for today if I may. I have the sump off. All is cleaned up and ready to refit with new gasket, filter etc. The oil pump pick up looks reasonably clear but I wanted to take it off to make sure it's 100% clean and drain the remaining black oil thats still dripping from it. How does the strainer come off ? It looks to be just a rubber o ring around the outside of the gauze, does it just pry off ? Ran out of time to look at it properly so thought I'd ask the experts rather than figure it out myself tomorrow and possibly damage it.

Chrisu, yeh there is a bit of wobble there.i suppose it's sensible to get it done whilst the heads off, or at least get someone that knows what they're talking about to have a gawk at it.
