Historic tax and MOT exemption
Ok, so just received tax reminder for the 900 which is registered as historic. tax renewal on the reminder is NIL, so all good. Tried to re tax it for the coming year at NIL value, now as I understand it, you still need to go through the renewal process but without cost? I get " no valid MOT can be found for this vehicle" "you need a valid MOT to tax a vehicle" on the tax website and it chucks you back to the start
Question is, do I need to go through the process of taxing at nil value if registered as historic and if I do, what's the crack with the Historic MOT side of things?
Just knew this historic MOT exemption was going to be a pain.
Trying to renew for the 1st April.

Re: Historic tax and MOT exemption
I don’t think the no mot kicks in till May and up to that point a current mot is required
Re: Historic tax and MOT exemption
MOT is supposed to come in the first few days of May I remember reading it was not the 1st
I was going to MOT a few of mine as not to loose nice riding days and as they are going to free tax I am already saving its also nice to have a full MOT cert

Re: Historic tax and MOT exemption
I will also MOTing but not until the weathers better. I was trying to get organised and do the tax renewal when the reminder arrived or I'm likely to forget!.

Re: Historic tax and MOT exemption
mot exemption starts may 20th, vehicles modified , which have increased power to weight ratio by more than 15%(dont know what brake horsepower that is for a zed) will still have to get a mot
Re: Historic tax and MOT exemption
Very complicated.
So I would like to change my Z1 to Historic (tax exempt) but cannot as it has not been MOT'd since the mid 1980's.
If I wait until May 2018 can I then get it changed without an MOT
Just a though as I will be getting an MOT because I cant wait until May.

I got my reminder for my historic Z1B yesterday and it took 5 mins to re tax it, I'd motd it last June so it was nice and simple.

Re: Historic tax and MOT exemption
The MOT on my Z1b ran out in Feb but tax doesn't until end of March, thought I would chance my arm and try and re-tax it now, as per the first poster 'no MOT could be found'.
Now my question is, if I wait until May when it no longer needs an MOT will I be able to tax it then?
I know for the sake of £30 I should get it done but I have 3 Historic bikes that all need an MOT before May so was just wondering.
Cheers.

Re: Historic tax and MOT exemption
depending on what insurance company with you may not have valid insurance , with no mot, if you put your bike on sorn for a month , you may have to tell them, just easier to keep them mot and taxed, even if not used, as they may wont you to take out insurance to keep them off road, but insured, a right can of worms
Re: Historic tax and MOT exemption
now if its the same as the pre 60's stuff was no you would not have to had a pre existing MOT to be in for a no MOT needed
it did make me question a friend who had just pulled a car out of a barn and done the paper work and was now driving this total death trap with 50 year old tyers and nearly no brakes and in his mind was legal as it did not need an MOT any more

Re: Historic tax and MOT exemption
as i understand, the vehicle will not automatically become mot exempt at the time of change, unless it has a current mot.
if its not moted it will need one,vosa/dvsa would like to see that it was roadworthy at that time.
stops old shite being dragged from barns after 30 yrs and being used on road while being unroadworthy and having no safety checks
i"m an mot tester & got this from vosa a few wks ago

I very much hope they has seen the error of there ways from the pre 60's start at no MOT needed
My mate was balling that this would not be good for them as a Bike MOT center, So I pointed out to him in the summer months he has more than 3 week waiting for a MOT so how many people were going else were, he still did not see my point that it will make not one jot of difference to him

Mot is theoretically only valid till you leave the mot station, after that all the con and use and vehicle roadworthiness legislation still applies..
