So I'm the new owner of KWACKERZ1's old Magnum 2 which I bought as this years winter project. I've got a few changes in mind, mainly cosmetic, so the first thing to go was the seat unit. I went through a couple of false starts but eventually settled on a TR750 seat and only using the top half of the fairing so the engine would be out on show,

OOPS Don't know why the pic's come out upside down they're the right way round in the file lol.
Anyway, after a bit of cutting and shutting the seat now sit's a couple of inches further forward and I've made an aluminium base and battery tray to bolt on so I don't have to cut the Magnum frame about. This is the base unit before I added a few more strengthening pieces to it and loosely bolted to the frame.

Next was a full strip down ready to change the powdercoat on the frame. Got a few daft quotes for stripping but in the end found some stuff on eBay called Powerstrip for £24 a gallon which fetched the coating off a treat.
It's just like the old Nitromors but stronger
Managed to pick up an original Magnum swingarm instead of the modified SV650 one fitted and had the lot coated shiny black
On to the tank.
Never seen so much filler in a tank, six hours of me life I'll never get back
Tank has had a couple of small pinholes welded up and has gone to a mate to have as many of the dents knocked out as he can.
I had the engine soda blasted which uncovered a couple of small problems. The cylinder head needed a small repair as it had broken a piece off where one of the cam cap bolts comes through and had been filled with what looked like car filler and one of the 6mm crankcase bolts at the front which helps bolt the to halves together was held in with black silicone, this meant splitting the crankcases to remove what was left of the broken bolt.
And that's where I'm up to at the moment.

One bonus of splitting the cases was the discovery of a welded an balanced crank and after the old paint had been blasted off I noticed the top crankcase had been engraved with “Robert “ and a serial number, dunno what that refers to but it’d be nice to find out.

Nice, I used powerstrip to strip my Harris great stuff, would be good to find out want the stamp on the engine means, good luck

So the engine is back together after fixing the broken crankcase bolt at the front There appeared to be little or virtually no sealant between the crankcase halves, when I came to torque down the larger 8mm bolts which run across the casings and support the crank the two end bolts (5&6 in the sequence) by the pick up casing stripped with less than ten pounds on the torque wrench Soooooo, take it apart again and get my mate Dynodave round with his insert kit to sort it out, put it all back together and torque down as per manual, all good (hopefully). Next is final wash off and prep of the engine and then paint. The last few bikes I built all had black engines so this will be silver for a change.

I never had the bottom end apart, the motor came from Marlin so may have been a graham salter motor.
Interesting amount of filler on the tank as before I gave it to the painter to do it green, I ran it bare like this.

Yup, shed loads of filler in the tank Phil, the other side was just the same, strangely there was loads of filler but probably only about 9-10 small dents in it and one large one in the left hand side. It would be nice to find out more about the motor..... Here's a pic of the tank after all the filler was removed.

Latest update.....painted the engine silver, looks great, cracking finish....but....I've changed my mind and I'm doing it black instead lol.

top tip for magnum alloy tanks. Fully pressure test for leaks before you go for paint......
Mine had a hairline crack along the seam at the bottom right of the tank. Only showed itself after an expensive paint job and being sat with fuel in for a week. Empty tank, strip and line. Problem solved for now.

Cheers for that, luckily the company who do all my ally welding for me make radiators and intercoolers so when they repaired the pinholes in the tank the kindly pressure tested it for me afterwards but I’ll drop it back to them after it’s had the dents knocked out to test again just in case

Well, a bit of progress at last after a bit of a false start with painting the engine silver.....Now satin black, pleased with the look.
