Regulator/Rectifier Recommendations - Z1000 MK2

#1 PostAuthor: njwmct » Thu Apr 09, 2020 8:46 am

Hi Guys,
As a precaution I'm thinking about replacing the Regulator / Rectifier on my 79 Z1000 MKII
There seem to be quite a few different ones on-line at wildly varying prices.
I want something that is a direct plug & play replacement - looking for your recommendations please ?

Electrex list this for the MKII as a direct replacement. Dont know how it compares for price but assuming its the correct format for yours and you dont have a Li battery it would be my recommendation. Out of stock just now but shouldnt take tooo long and no quibble guarantee from a company that wont evaporate the minute youre payment is made.

That's interesting what they say about lithium batteries.
I have them on all 3 of my bikes with standard charging system and reg/rec, and not had an issue yet.
Surprised Li batteries can be sold as suitable for specific model bikes if they're not ?

I have no idea about electrics but from 'Mr. Coose' on here and reading between the lines; Li batteries are probably OK with standard transistorised (old style) Reg / Rec's as would be lead acid batteries in their different forms. The Electrex Reg / Rec's are now MOSFET (Shin Dengen) as far as i know with all the advantages and of course some dis-advantages as well.
With regard to recommending Li batteries for certain applications i would be interested to know if there is a co-responding cautionary note from suppliers / manufacturers about the use of Li batteries on machines equipped with MOSFET Reg / Rec's or those that are upgraded to them!!!

Lithium batteries need a higher voltage charge - 14.8v instead of the normal 14.3v I believe?

I did run a lithium on my Harris for a good 18 months with no issues, but used to top it up with a specific charger regularly.
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!
