There should be a cast boss on the cylinder head in line with each valve. The cut-out in the tool, (where the cap head screw is) fits over this boss.
As someone has said, if you can post a picture of the tool in position on your head it will almost certainly help.

Dont know what happened there but as i pressed submit the content disappeared anyway this was it.

Looking at the pic of the tool you posted, i seem to remember the bottom of the curved part being thicker and having a recess in it. Perhaps its the angle the pic is taken at but that looks truncated!

This picture shows the locating boss for the shim tool for No.1 cylinder, inlet valve.
There are similar bosses for each valve on the outside edges of the head.

This is my shim tool, a genuine Kawasaki item. The arrow points to where the boss on the cylinder head should be positioned in order to change a shim. Hopefully this may help.

It is also important to ensure the tip of the tool is correctly located against the shim bucket.

Many thanks for the pictures CAT3 and everyone who has tried to help. This all confirms that I am placing the tool correctly. However it is clear that the tool (in the middle) is not the same as the original Kawasaki tool. Z-Power are sending me another one which differs from their latest batch. Wait and see time...

Hi Kev - yes I'm using it correctly but mine has no cut-out at all. Z-Power say their recent supply looks different from what they have had and are sending me old stock.

I wonder how many people had a go at making one like I did the design for many years ago.
I still have mine and it's still working wonders, gives a bit of satisfaction knowing you've made it yourself and it actually works.

Can you not file the tip flat, it will do the job then, there should be plenty to lift the shim out when done.

I am going to make one on this lock down even though I have both types already I also have a specially adapted screwdriver somewhere which I used on my first Zed, it worked just as well.

Been meaning to make one for years, so with time on my hands and a bit of rubbish I knocked this one out this afternoon, just need to make it look nice now.

Replacement tool arrived today from Z-Power - works a treat! They were really quick to sort it too. Good on you - making your own. :D

Looks good, but next time use titanium & drill it out with extra holes for added cool & performance :!:
