Front End or Calliper advice please

#1 PostAuthor: raj203 » Sat Jul 18, 2020 6:43 pm

Looking for help/ advice please.
Whilst this might not please the purists I have a 79 USA import rescued from abuse several years ago.
It’s a hotch potch of bits but I love it & practically a daily ride.
I’d like to upgrade the front end or minimum the front brakes.
Is there a relatively modern front end that would pretty much go straight in or modern/ unrated callipers that would fit the existing set up?
I’ve searched the forums and classifieds but to be honest haven’t quite worked out the search logic.
All the best, R

You can get Billets or Pretechs that will bolt straight on and you can get floating discs to replace the standard ones. The calipers on their own will be a massive improvement with the addition of discs it will stand on its nose. Straight bolt on. Downside is it's not a cheap option. Any front end swap will require a lot more work but could possibly be done for less money, especially if you're an engineer...

Later unitrack type calipers might bolt on with a 10mm spacer welded to the carrier. They do on z1000j/gpz1100 period bikes and the hole centres look the same on Z1000a1.

I did this to a gpz1100b and it made quite a decent improvement over the std calipers (which aren't a very clever design and tend to twist under braking and wear the pads unevenly) for not a lot of time and money. Don't look out of place either.
