Drive shaft and output shaft shims...??

#1 PostAuthor: sharpeyie » Sun Jan 31, 2021 8:46 pm

Finally reassembling the gearbox on the Z1B. I noticed when I stripped everything off the shaft to give them a good clean, that the shims referred to in the FSM were missing (3 in total.) Furthermore, when I went to compare notes with the Kawasaki parts catalog for the Z1, they are missing there too - no reference whatsoever.

Any thoughts on whether they are required or not and if so, how the f**k do you know what spec we’re looking for?

Thanks again.

Stewart.

What page of the SM referred to shims? I've checked mine and can't for the life of me find any mention of them. You wouldn't be referring to thrust washers by any chance?

Page 49 - it’s in the Disassembly of the drive shaft and output shaft section. Thrust washers are shown separately. The graphic has an itemised exploded drawing of the two. Parts identified as number 3, 17 & 19 are just referred to as 'shims’. If I can upload a piccie I will..

this subject has been discussed in the past & i think the outcome was the shims are not fitted & the illustration in the manual is incorrect

This is the "same" image from page 49 of my Rev.3, July 15, 1974 SM which (allegedly) covers the Z1-B. You will note that items 3 and 17 have been removed!

I'm guessing you have an earlier version of the manual before they amended it.

That’ll do me for an explanation.

Much obliged.

Thanks both.
