z900-A4 - Carburetor Type and float height?

#1 PostAuthor: JWO261N » Mon Apr 12, 2021 9:31 am

I have my carbs out and in pieces now, all nice and clean and the z-power carb rebuild kit and new floats are all installed.

I jumped onto the interweb to find out how to set the initial float height before closing the bowl and found that all the VM26 images and diagrams look like a different carb to mine.

Mine look exactly like the one on Page 67 of Dave Marsden's book.

All the diagrams on-line show the VM26 carb as having the float bowl drain plugs at the very bottom and not at the side like mine?
I'm wondering if its just a different float bowl I'm seeing and I just set the float height at 22-24mm ?

The above photo is correct for the 26mm Z900 carbs.
I set the floats at 26mm. However, you need to check the actual fuel heights afterwards to ensure that the level is 1-3mm below the base of the carb body. Don't just set the floats and assume the fuel height will be correct, as it likely won't be.

Float height for those carbs is 25mm + or - 1mm.
The reason your VM26 carb search comes up with large bottom drain plugs is because you are getting results for the generic single application VM26.
These carbs are VM26SS and are specific to Kawasaki Z900/z1000 aircooled fours and Suzuki GS750 to 1000 aircooled fours.
The same applies to the VM28SS versions.
SS stands for Special Set..

Excellent thanks.
Just needed to get it in the ballpark.
I have a stand I cobbled together for the carbs so I can fuel them and check the actual levels before putting back in the bike.

All good thanks.
I have a little rig that I can check the wet values for the floats with before reinstalling them .
