147 series carb floats

#1 PostAuthor: MrDavo » Sun May 09, 2021 9:40 am

Having beggared up the tangs on two floats by bending them too far then back again, I need a pair of floats for early Z1 carbs, mine are marked 147 3, and were made in May 1973.

They are the ones with asymmetric floats, a big one and a small one, with moulded, not straight cutaways, and nickel finished hardware. New or serviceable used needed, or just point me at a source, I can’t find any.

They are rubbish photos but I saw these (there is another listing for a second float) and I think they are later floats. There is no sign of the moulded cutaways (they are straight) and the metal is brass not steel. I haven’t got a John Brookes’ book handy but I think these are for the carbs with the small drain screw, mine have the big 17mm one.

Typical vague US eBay listing, I’d hate to pay a fortune, wait an age, pay Vat etc and then find they were the wrong floats. It’s possible they’d fit anyway but I’d like all 4 floats the same in the interests of smooth running.

They look the same as on my 217 0 carbs.

Yes, and not my 147 ones. To say they fit all 73-75 models I think is inaccurate.

Yes, those are the ones!

The part number I need is 16031-24. My attempt to repair mine with solder just came to naught when one of the weakened tangs broke off.

Until I find a couple of floats, my Z1A project, although nearly finished, is nothing but an expensive paperweight.

Thanks Paul, however if you see my thread in ‘Bike Help’ you’ll see I’ve managed to repair the floats, hopefully permanently, but I’ll give you a shout if it all goes breasts up.
