I know this has been covered many times but i reckon quite a few folks (such as myself) could benefit from your trials/errors/successes.

What is the most cost effective way to some more power?

I'm building up a spare Z1000A1 engine which has 73mm Wiseco's (1100cc) but standard valves and head. It has Norris 357 cams but i'm fairly certain they're scrap (engine had spiders, weeds and leaves all over it and the cam cover resting on top so water damaged).
It will have a free flowing exhaust and electronic ignition.

So I'm after some suggestions as to the best (cheapest!) path to a bit more power. Would standard carbs be large enough to make use of the big bore? How much does a bit of gas flowing cost, relative to a set of fancy carbs? Which of these is of more use if you can only justify the expense of one or the other?

Z1000 had 26mm carbs as standard they weren’t really big enough to begin with. A set of 28mm Z1R carbs would be a better bet if you can get some, those and a bit of gas flowing would be better than expensive carbs and no head work.

Head work should be the first thing you do.
Even a stock motor will produce significant gains with a gas flow.

So how much does gas flowing cost and who do the members here have good experiences with?

I've decided to replace the Norris cams with a nice stock pair from D&K, bought a replacement set of barrels from them too and had them bored out to use the 73mm Wisecos, which cleaned up really well. I was fortunate enough to find as new replacement camchain running gear inside, so that has saved me some cash. Everything has been vapour blasted and i've sprayed it with Simoniz satin black (which has come out very nice). Ready to rebuild it now but may get a bit of flowing done first, particularly if there is anyone within a reasonable distance of Nottingham recommended.

Carbs - i'm happy with RS34s on my Z1R. Talk to Ralph at Bikerstoolbox

Yep, get the head flowed, I did 1075 kit on mu Z1R, Webb camshaft, RS34's and a Buzzard port and Head job...big difference
