Coils. Resistors? Z1000A1
Z1000A '77.
Just in the process of changing the coils, I'm replacing with Z Power parts shown. Is this a resistor? There is only one mounted under the right coil, cylinder 2/3. Do I still need it? It would have been like this since the late 80's when the frame was sprayed. I'm using NGK B8E S sparkplugs. The more I read up on resistors the more confused I get!!
Re: Coils. Resistors? Z1000A1
It's nothing to do with coils. It relates to the headlight. It connects to the blue wires on the RH and LH switch blocks

Thanks a lot, I will junk it then. It's had its wires plugged together since....
Are there resistors in the NGK plug caps? What plugs would anyone recommend?

Red ngk plug caps have 5 ohm resistors.
Black ngk plug cap have no resistors.
B8ES have no resistors.
B8RES have 5 ohm resistors in the plug.
Only one or none max resistors per ignition line to each cylinder.
Denso W24ES are equivalent to ngk B8ES but in my opinion are far better plugs, more forgiving, more reliable and better lasting.

Re: Coils. Resistors? Z1000A1
So as long as I don't use red caps with a resistor plug, B8RES, everything will be ok?
Black caps and Denso plugs is the way I'll go.
Thanks for your help.

Yes, one or none resistors per line.
W22es is equiv to B7ES if you want to go slightly hotter plugs.

I bought this coils and caps kit from Zpower a couple of weeks ago. The red caps option was not available so it came with black NGK plugs.
My black LB05F plugs are stamped 5K ohm so black plugs having no resistor is not a hard and fast rule.
Just something to be aware of.

I remember when I was restoring an XL185 it has a "ballast resistor" connected in the headlight circuit. it was broken so I deleted it and just joined the wiring ends together , but then it started blowing headlight bulbs - turns out it damped down surges in voltage/ampage when revving , which could lead to blown bulbs through overload. Prob was sorted when I found one and refitted it. So it may actually do something - if you delete it then watch for electrical issues elsewhere

Many thanks, I discovered it as pictured, the blue wires are connected together and have been for 30 years.
