Parts arrived from USA today so finished off building the carbs.

I'd took a bit of a gamble when buying the parts as these VM32 ovalbores are unique to the Suzuki 1000 Katana with only around 1000 sets made and apart from the odd screw and washer almost all the parts are listed as discontinued with most also having no part number to cross reference .
I figured that whilst the backplate and bodies etc are specific there's a good chance that other parts were raided from the parts bin..

The floats were the first result and luckily Niche Cycle has measurements accompanying many of their items.
The ones listed for the 29 and 33 smoothies seemed to match which made sense so took a punt on those and happily they are identical as can be seen when compared to one of my good cleaned up ones on the right.

The next gamble was the air screws.
The Katana one (top right) is 10mm shorter than the items as found in the stock Kwak or Suzuki 26 or 28 vm's (bottom right) .
The ones for the 29 smoothies looked the correct proportions but they have a bleed hole on the straight shank and i didn't really want to either have to plug the hole in those or muck about shortening the longer VM ones except as a last resort.
A search of "Mikuni air screw " on Google images came up with the VM14/73 from the range of VM 606 26mm to 30 mm spigot mount carbs which looked close enough so another punt from Niche came up smelling of roses with another four identical screws for the job.

And while i was at it i also ordered some new dust caps and nylon bobbins to complete the choke plunger refurbs.

Float heights done, slides bench synced and new gaskets made.
Pretty much everything important is new and happily they took the fuel mixture screws from the stock VM26/28's so they were easy enough to find.

And a couple of hours later they are on with cables hooked up which give a nice quarter turn on the XJR throttle .

At the moment it just runs straight up between the carb filters and vents out under the nose of the seat slightly higher than the cam cover.
I've run the same on the alloy cafe for 10 years with no oil mist escaping so unless this behaves differently i'll leave it as is and if it doesn't i'll run it into a catch tank mounted in that space where the gussets are on the XJR arm in front of the tyre.

What the hell is wrong with some people ???

Eight weeks ago i took the cut down and freshly powdercoated Giuliari seat and re profiled foam to get re upholstered and re- covered to a local firm - RETRO REFITS - that were highly recommend. ( apparently by idiots with low standards  )

20230813_112156.jpg

After several meetings accompanied by plenty of detailed pics and measurements of the seat on and off the bike showing gaps etc i left them with strict instructions to replicate the shape of the old cutdown foam in a higher density version which i chose and then recover the seat in the exact style of the original with the same three panel layout on the hump and even supplied an original cover to template from.

The idea being that at first glance the seat would retain something of it's original uncut propotions

After a couple of "delays" and another visit to their shop i got a call on Monday to say it was done and when i picked it up i was greeted with this abomination which vaugely resembles something between a beanbag and a puffer jacket..
 WTF!

Gobsmacked is an understatement

SUNP0740.JPG

They have totally ignored everything we discussed and done the exact opposite to the worst quality of work i have ever seen which virtually fell apart in my hands.

Obviously they didn't get their money and when i asked for my old foam back they said they couldn't find it but by the thickness of the padding and the view through the holes on the underside i had my suspicions.

So once i got it back home i pulled the cover off.....

SUNP0746.JPG

And lo and behold !
There's my old reprofiled foam (which was supposed to be used as a pattern for a copy in high density foam) under another inch or so of padding that looks as if it's been hacked from an old sofa .

I currently have nothing more to say .

That’s a shocker!
It’s an appallingly poor quality job and I wonder if they really expected anyone to ever accept and pay for a job so badly done?

It is RETRO REFITS in Scunthorpe that i named at the top of my post ..
They do alot of hot rod interiors and bike seats etc and i couldn't have vetted them any better than i did.
Took my time, Looked at their previous work, sent them loads of pics and measurements in between a couple of visits and was very specific about replicating the panel shapes and stitch patterns etc and then they took eight weeks to produce a baggy pile of shit full of old foam held together with non stick glue.

As is typical, as soon as i posted this on FB etc there are some horror stories about them coming to the surface that you never seem to uncover before getting involved ..

I really don't know what they thought they were doing.
It bears no resemblance to what i discussed with them and everything done is the opposite of what i asked.
It's so bad and bizarre that if he wasn't dead i half expected Jeremy Beadle to pop up from behind the counter saying that i'd been framed...

I'm flabberd by may gast !!
It is just unbelieveable that they even thought their effort was even remotely acceptable. I'm surprised that they are still in business as they shouldn't be !!
It looks like a child at primary school has done it !

That's not even finished, creased around the back.
Shows a lack of pride in their work.
Shocking.
