After recently re-joining the club after an absence of 20 years,I was a member from1985-2005
originally the reason that I rejoined was to get some help and advice as my bike was not running to well I was also keen to go to some runs and rallies next year as well as attending Stafford of course which I have never been to.I have a lot more time on my hands now as I have recently retired.
The bike I have is a Z1B 900 which I bought in 1985 and its done 70,000 miles although I have not put many miles on it over the last 20 years or so.I had met Andy Ferry and his wife Kathy in the mid 80s and knew he was still involved in the club so I sent him a private message to see if he could give me any help or advice I left my mob no and my e-mail address after about 5 minutes Fer called me and offered his help and advice either bring the bike up to Glenfoot or he would come down to my house near Lauder in the Scottish Borders I decided to go up to Glenfoot last wed and arrived up there for about 10am.After a quick chat a coffee and a tour of his showroom he opened his workshop the word meticulous is an understatement and so many tools of the highest quality snap on heaven !We wheeled the bike in and he first of all did a compression test as the engine was still warm three cylinders were 130.p.s.i and 1 was 127 p.s.i which was fine we then waited for the engine to cool down and did the valves it needed 3 shims and then adjusted the cam-chain.We then checked the timing which also needed adjusting,I have a Boyer Bransen electronic ignition. The plugs on 1+2 were very black Fer checked the Air screws and they were needing adjusting as well, finally he balanced the carbs, he also replaced the fuel hoses with proper ones and noticed the nut on the end of crankshaft had been slightly rubbing on the inside of the points cover another gasket was added.
Throughout the day he explained every step in detail and gave me pointers for the future as I will be doing this next time his words not mine! I left Glenfoot at about 4pm and the bike is running a lot better now and its great to have a piece of mind that the engine is still in great condition.I really was blown away by Fer's help and advice and knowledge the best way to describe it was above and way beyond highlight of the day apart from Kathys scones was seeing the Eddie Lawson replica what an amazing piece of workmanship thanks again to you both and also to Chris and Jerry for getting my membership up and running hopefully I will see some of you guys out and about at some events next year.
All the best Michael Notman.
