Actually look closer there is two!!!!!!! Chris please show all the pics that you think will help other not to be a dickhead like me, I thought it was compression when I kicked over the engine! The top cam guide is very loose in the picture I think you can see it's leaning to one side. It also moves up and down, I'm fairly sure the chain came off the guide.

did you buy the bike as a non runner or had you had it apart and put it back together.i think the sesson to be learned is always turn the motor over with a socket or spanner as you will feel it jump teeth and slip ,at least you can stop .

I'm not a mechanic, but being a long way from civilization I've got to do some essential maintenance. All I did was slacken the cam chain tensioner lock nut and turned the engine over by hand with the kick start to even out the slack as per the book. Thinking it was just compression then kicked it over! I now know not to do that again, I have to learn sometime and sometimes the hard way is how it's gonna be.
But I will say this forum is as good as someone standing next to you, the level of experience is absolutely priceless.

Think positive, at least the cylinder head doesn't appear to be damaged.
Is the bore scored where the valve dropped?
What condition are the piston crowns in?
Shutting the door after the horse has bolted but always take the plugs out and turn it over with a spanner on the 17mm timing nut by hand.
