Master cylinder overhaul

I managed to buy a UK spec tall m/cylinder for my Thousand A1 and would like to strip and paint it.

Question is can the plastic part be removed from the cast body ?

There seems to be a disc in the bottom of the reservoir that if turned would allow screws to be removed. I can`t move it though due to 4 tangs

Any ideas ?

You can see the reinforcing parts on the bottom that I assume are where the screws go ?

Dont try it, best to mask it up. mainekz did mine for me and did a lovely job on my Z1b.

On mine the plastic disc "snapped" out, I just hooked something under it and gave it a sharp pull - it seems to have survived. This revealed a metal plate held in with two cross head M5 screws. It's this that holds the plastic reservoir to the master cylinder body.

Chris the plastic disc just pulls out revealing the two screws, once they are removed the plastic reservoir is a straight pull out although they are a very tight fit, it seals by a rubber o-ring. Youll probably have to remove it depending on what finish you're going to use, I had my last one stove enamelled to resist the fluid and it does that well, believe me even the fumes of the fluid take 2pack paint off. I have the wrong one on my bike at the moment which I had masked and painted in 2 pack as a temporary measure and it's already peeling off, the original one for my bike is stripped at the moment ready to be anodised which still requires the plastic to be removed.

Take it apart. You need to replace the 'O' ring and you'll probably find the metal disc and screws are corroded.

Speak to Mark Hutton(01420 489859 mon-fri)he will black anodise it for you as it was originally,then it won't peel,the finish he gets is superb.

Did one of these last week. The plate in the bottom just flips out with a screwdriver. Then you have two screws in the bottom (make sure the screwdriver is a perfect fit) and put the item in a vice to hold it. Then the plate will come off and the plastic reservoir will come out. REMEMBER THE RIGHT SIZE SCREWDRIVER

What method did you use to remove the disc ?

Chris , Study the last photo and you will see 4 tangs which you press down very gently with a small screwdriver and the disc will pop out. If you have to get a new O ring make sure it is OK with brake fluid !

On anodising, I have approached companies to anodise the M/C body and they don't want to do any work that has had brake-fluid in it, or near it. That was a while ago, so maybe they have a cleaning agent that penetrates the metal, as the brake-fluid evidently impregnates the metal.
