camchain idler??

Could anyone please let me know the order the metal plates and damping rubbers go on the top camchain idler gear on the z1000a1,the reason i ask is i am struggling to get the cam cover back on,ive got the shit haynes manual but can't see a diagram,i have put it together in the following order starting at the top:-
metal plate,
damping rubber,
idler gear mounting,
damping rubber,
metal plate,
cylinder head.
i know it's a tight fit between the camcover and frame but now it's as if the idler gear is to high,or i need a bigger hammer!!

Hi. The idler assembly is right so it looks like you need to jiggle the cam cover around a bit more. Its easier done if the carbs are off so the cover can be slid on from the rear.

Hi Bart,

Like zed1015 says, it is easier with the carbs off, however if you cant take them off, try and line it up from the carb side of the engine and slide it on

Carbs are off,just been fitting some new inlet rubbers so will try again,i know in the past it's been a bit of struggle to get the camcover on,just this time it seemed like it just wasn't going to fit at all,maybe i drank to much at the weekend... ,

Bart, the metal plates are usually vulcanised to the dampers. The top rubber dampers (with plate) is 9.5 mm thick when new. The bottom rubber (with plate) is 7 mm. Maybe you have two 9.5 mm rubbers instead of the 7 mm bottom. It can happen if you have a box full of old rubbers with the metal plates separated from the rubbers.

I have seen trouble with using different cam covers. Noting that the Z1000 has two small "bubbles" in the casting to allow for the top idler.

As Garn say the top damper rubbers are thicker but that is on the earlier z1/900 pressed steel type idler.

Height of the later style 1000 idler is initially governed by the metal spacer sleeves inside the rubbers which are either seperate or attached to one of the metal end plates depending on year. Either way it is impossible to get the idler height wrong unless of course these are ommited in which case the idler could only be lower and the rubbers would be over compressed and eventually fail.

The damping rubbers on the later style 1000 are both the same thickness when new so the ones you have ordered should be correct but the top pair do eventually get squashed slightly due to the pressure that is constantly exerted upwards from the tensioned camchain pushing up on the idler.

Thanks for the help,camcover now fitted,the damper rubbers on mine all seemed to be the same thickness,they are not new but in pretty good nick so just re used them.
