Clutch judder,gear selection
Guyz ,been shaking down the a4 today, couple of probs apparent, clutch plates were stuck together as bike had been standing a few years b4 i got it,freed plates ups, cleaned and re oiled, adjusted clutch but judder apparent when pulling off in 1st plates didnt appear warped or any bust springs or grooned splines, bike is difficult with downshift and hard to locate neutral, ups shift is fine, suspecting plates may indeed be warped or binding though do appear to release oh through oil filler, any thoughts b4 i pull clutch apart again?or owt else may be causing probs down shifting...Ta Paul J

Re: Clutch judder,gear selection
Just sounds like the old plates grabbing.
Might cure itself after a good few miles or you may need to lightly etch them to open up the surface so they absorb some more oil.
Probably have to soak them a while or give them a light simmering in a pan full of oil on the hob.

Re: Clutch judder,gear selection
is the clutch basket ok no grooves where the plates slide ?
Re: Clutch judder,gear selection
Doesnt appear to be any grooves in the basket as far as i can tell, have not checked basket springs, once bike is moving no probs, judder seems to be getting less as i put some miles on,though still hard to downshift or find neutral, have got a complete z thou a2 clutch may swap out tommorow!

Re: Clutch judder,gear selection
This is probably not what is happening to yours, a few years back my old thou was suffering judder, i checked the cable, plates, changed the oil a couple of times and the bugger kept doing it, then one day on the way home after a blast out i lost all drive completely, so i pushed the old girl home the last couple of miles, i took the sprocket cover off to find the tab washer had broke and the nut had come undone so i can only assume the sprocket was coming off and on the spline giving me the juddering until the nut and sprocket came right off, as luck would have it nothing bad happened a new tab washer and all was fine again and no more judder.
Re: Clutch judder,gear selection
Well installed known set of good plates and checked cush drive ,chain etc all good no judder now and shift has improved, bike selects all up shifts ok but is still reluctant on the down shifts and neutral selection, guess next place to look is under the sprocket cover ,any suggestions what to be looking for in there? did notice gear shaft seems a bit wobbly..Ta Paul J

Re: Clutch judder,gear selection
could be a bent gear change shaft or broken shaft mounting under the transmission cover
Re: Clutch judder,gear selection
Hi Paul,
If the gear shaft seals are worn that will give you the wobble and could affect the change action.
I have stock of after market replacements if you need them.
It takes 3 seals to do the whole job and the inner tranny cover got to come off.
Outer 2 fit back to back on the engine cover (not sealing any oil).
Can drop off at Lees to save postage if you are quick.
pm me if you like.
