Won't engage 2nd gear

#1 PostAuthor: Fred the Zed » Thu Apr 06, 2017 7:33 pm

Hmm

Tracked down the Z1R's starting problem to a loose connection on the ignition circuit so it now fires up easily and runs well....

Booked it in for an MoT tomorrow so thought I'd just give it a (short) run down the drive to check it pulls away etc and although it engages 1st gear fine and pulls away fine it won't select 2nd. :down

I'm sure its down to the new clutch cable and PMC easy clutch kit I've installed since it last ran as it went through the gears fine before I laid it up a year or so ago but I just wanted to check there's nothing else it could be....? Any ideas?

Tell me I haven't just discovered the positive neutral finder.... I've done some t'interweb research and it appears you can't select 2nd gear from a standstill on Kawasakis. I've had loads of Kawasakis before and never knew this!

I'm feeling a bit dim

That's not helping...

I've just spent an hour trying to adjust the clutch cable only to find that where the Clymer manual says loosen the locknut and tighten the screw till it stops and then back it off half a turn it actually means loosen the screw. It might be an anomaly of having fitted a PMC easy clutch kit but man was I pissed off when I realised that I was adjusting the tension backwards. At least I kept the easy clutch instructions, all carefully filed away for future reference. It was only when I dug them out I remembered they were in Japanese, with some fairly unhelpful pictures.

I'm not tinkering again.... not for a while anyway.

There's nothing wrong with it. It won't go into 2nd unless it's moving. It's called a positive neutral finder .

Shite, I better ask him about that. I just assumed he had been riding it in first trying to get into second......

Put on the centre stand so back wheel turns, you can go through the box then without bike moving..

Think youself lucky, I took the clutch cover off assuming there was something wrong with the gear change mechanism, and as I found out, on a Z it isn't behind the clutch.

Ah... Cheers. I took the centre stand off so I could fit the PMC underslung caliper but I have a paddock stand....
